Feb. Frenzy Includes MSHSAA Wrestling, Basketball Districts

February is the month for High School Athletes competing during the winter season because it is the home stretch and District Tournaments, the start of the road to the Missouri State High School Activities Association championships, take place this month.

This Friday-Saturday, starting times unavailable at press time, 16 high schools in Missouri will host District Wrestling Tournaments, four per enrollment class. There are 14 weight classes and the top four in each weight class advances to the 78th State Wrestling Championships, Feb. 14-16 at Mizzou Arena, Columbia, Mo. The top six in state, in each weight class, will receive state medals.

Hazelwood Central is one of the 16 high schools that will host a Wrestling District Tournament, Class Four, District Two. All of the Suburban North Conference teams — Hazelwood Central, Hazelwood East, Hazelwood West, McCluer North, McCluer, Pattonville, Ritenour and Riverview Gardens — will compete against four Metro Catholic Conference teams — Chaminade, CBC, DeSmet and St. Louis University High — and two Francis Howell District high schools, Howell Central and Howell North. Meanwhile McCluer South-Berkeley and Trinity Catholic will travel to Marshall, Mo., for the Class Two, District Two meet.

Later this month Basketball begins their road to Mizzou Arena with District Tournaments. Classes Four and Five begin that trip Feb. 16, although most will begin Feb. 18, and end no later than Feb. 23. That road continues for the district winners with a sectional round on Feb. 27, then the sectional winner moves on to the quarterfinal round March 1 and that winner moves onto Mizzou Arena, March 7-8.

High Schools in Classes One, Two and Three can start district tournaments as early as Feb. 23 and end no later than March 1. Sectionals are March 4 (Class One) and March 5 (Classes Two and Three), Quarterfinals are March 8, Semifinals (at Mizzou Arena) are March 13 (Classes One, Three) and March 14 (Class Two) and Finals (at Mizzou Arena) are March 14 (Class One) and March 15 (Classes Two, Three).

Six of the eight Suburban North Conference teams will compete in the Class Five, District Seven Tournament at Riverview Gardens High School. McCluer North, defending Boys State Champion, and Hazelwood East, runner up last year in Girls State, compete in boys’ and girls’ hoops along with Hazelwood Central, Hazelwood West, McCluer and Riverview Their road to state for the district winners include stops at St. Louis Community College at Meramec, Kirkwood (Sectional) and University of Missouri-St. Louis (Quarterfinal).

Incarnate Word Academy, 2006 Girls Class Five State Champions, will be in Class Five, District Three along with DeSmet, an all-boys school, and two Suburban North teams, Pattonville and Ritenour. That road to Mizzou Arena for the district winner includes Sectional and Quarterfinal games at UM-St. Louis.

In Class Four McCluer South-Berkeley will host the District Five Tournament with Berkeley’s arch rival from the Suburban East Conference, Jennings, two St. Louis Public Schools, Miller Career Academy and Soldan-International Studies, University City and Rosati-Kain, an all-Girls school. The road to state for the district winners includes stops at Parkway West (Sectionals) and Hazelwood Central (Quarterfinals).

In Class Three North County Tech, Trinity Catholic and Lutheran North will be in District Five, at Orchard Farm High, and will compete against Cardinal Ritter, Lutheran-St. Charles County and Whitfield. That road to Mizzou Arena for the winners includes stops at St. Charles West (Sectionals) and Hannibal (Quarterfinals).

GIRLS SWIMMING & DIVING — There are no district tournaments so qualifying for the 33rd State Championships, Feb. 15-16 at the St. Peters’ Rec-Plex, are determined by a list of standards (unavailable) and must meet them by this Saturday. Suburban North Conference teams — Hazelwood Central, Hazelwood East, Hazelwood West, McCluer North, McCluer, Pattonville and Ritenour — have their last chance Thursday in the final day of the three-day conference meet at Bridgeton Recreation Complex while Trinity Catholic and Incarnate Word have until Saturday.
