Hazelwood Central Girls Basketball will be playing a lot of games in the next three weeks including two tournaments in the next two, which will test the Hawks six-game winning streak and puts an 8-3 record on the line.
It began Jan 21 in the Parkway Central Tournament with a mid-day game against Suburban North Conference rival McCluer then plays Fort Zumwalt East or Parkway Central, date not available but likely was Jan 23 and the Parkway Central Tournament is likely to end Jan 25 with games at 7 p.m. (third place and seventh place games) and 8:30 (championship and consolation finals. The Parkway Central Tournament will be played in two Gymnasiums.
Next week Hazelwood Central will be heading to Webster Groves High Roberts Gymnasium for the Webster Winter Classic. It begins Jan. 29 with a 6 p.m. game against defending Class Five State Champion Columbia Rock Bridge with the winner playing Fort Zumwalt West or St. Joseph’s Academy Feb. 1 at 8:30 while the loser plays FZW or SJA at 4 p.m. The Classic ends Feb. 2 with games at 12 noon (seventh place) 1:30 (consolation finals), 3 p.m. third place and 4:30 (championship).
Belleville (Ill.) East, Cor Jesu and Incarnate Word will also compete at Webster Groves. “We will have a lot of games the next two weeks,” said Hazelwood Central head coach Wendy Reeves. “We’re going to be tested in the next two weeks.”
However the week after playing at Webster Groves will be even more taxing to Hazelwood Central with four games in five days. The Hawks have a Feb. 4, 5:30 rematch at McCluer then play 6 p.m. home games against University City (Feb. 5). Nerinx Hall (Feb. 6) and Riverview Gardens (Feb. 8). The following week sees the Hawks play three games in five days as they visit Mary Institute-Country Day School Feb. 11 at 6 p.m., hosts Pattonville Feb. 13 at 6 p.m. and visits Hazelwood West Feb. 15 at 5:30.
NORTH TECH TAKES NINE-GAME WIN STREAK TO ELDON TOURNAMENT — North Tech girls, like the boys (see related story), are on a winning streak and like the men the Golden Eagle ladies have not lost since mid-December. North Tech will take a nine-game winning steak and a 10-3 overall record to Eldon, a mid-Missouri city, for a three-game, three-day tournament, Jan 24-26.
North Tech will be tested right away Jan .24 with a 6 p.m. game against Suburban West Conference contender Rockwood Marquette (9-4). On Jan 25 that winner plays the winner of the Carl Junction-Carnahan High School of the Future game at 9 p.m. while the losers play at 6 p.m. The tournament concludes Jan. 26 with games at 11:30 a.m. (consolation final and seventh-place games), 2:30 (third place) and 5:30 (championship).
After the Eldon Tournament North Tech will have another tests Jan. 29 as the Golden Eagles have a 6 p.m. game at John Burroughs. North Tech helped themselves with wins in their own MLK Showcase last weekend. North Tech won Jan. 19 over Kennett, a Missouri Bootheel school, and was a 66-24 rout of Public High League contender Soldan-International Studies. North Tech has two wins over McCluer, was 1-1 versus Riverview Gardens and had only one lopsided loss, 55-31 Nov. 29 at Whitfield.
