Hazelwood Central Hoops Hope Holiday Momentum Carries Into ‘13

Ending 2012 with wins in Holiday Basketball Tournaments have Hazelwood Central Boys and Girls teams looking forward to continuing momentum into 2013.

Hazelwood Central Boys had a four game winning streak and the championship of the Meramec Holiday Tournament going into their Jan. 8 showdown at home against defending Class Five State Champion McCluer North. Central Girls carried a three-game winning streak, and winning consolation honors at the Visitation Academy Christmas Tournament, to a Jan. 8 game at McCluer North before the Hawk ladies have a Jan. 10, 5:30 home showdown against Hazelwood East. The Hawk men have a 12 noon showdown Jan. 12 at East.

Hazelwood Central Boys ended the 2012 portion of the schedule with a 7-3 record losing only at neutral sites — to Belleville West in the St. John Vianney Jerry Boeckmann Invitational and in two games of the Waynesville Shootout, Sunrise Christian Academy and Larkin. Central won the Meramec Tournament by defeating Lindbergh, 56-21, Parkway West, 51-45, DeSmet (minus Nolan Berry), 66-58, and CBC, 59-45.

Hazelwood Central Girls ended 2012 portion of the schedule with a 5-3 record. Two of the Hawk losses were to Webster Groves, Dec. 4 at Webster and Dec. 22 at Visitation, while the other loss was Dec. 5 at Parkway South. Central rebounded from their second loss to Webster (42-41) at the Visitation Tournament by defeating Francis Howell Central for the second time this year (55-30 at Viz) then defeated Cor Jesu 43-26 and Lafayette 42-34 to win the consolation title.

McCLUER NORTH BOYS, in a rebuilding season, took a 7-4 record to Hazelwood Central and the Stars opened 2013 with a decisive 74-49 home win Jan. 2 over Normandy. The Star men also participated in the Waynesville Shootout by defeating the host team 63-62 on Dec. 15. .

HAZELWOOD EAST GIRLS stumbled into 2013 as they took a 9-3 record to a Jan. 8 home game against McCluer before visiting Hazelwood Central Jan. 10 at 5:30. After starting 9-1 the Spartan ladies lost the last two games of the Duchesne Invitational, to eventual tournament champion St. Charles High 49-36 and to the host Pioneers, 47-46.

HAZELWOOD WEST GIRLS took a 5-5 record to a Jan. 8 game at 9-1 Ritenour but the Wildcats took home their second runner up finish in a tournament losing to St. Charles High 49-40 Dec. 28 in the Duchesne Invitational championship game after defeating the host Pioneers 56-44 in the Dec. 27 semifinals and Lutheran South 53-42 in the opening round on Dec. 21. The Wildcats opened 2013 with a 62-50 Jan. 4 at Wentzville-Holt.

NORTH TECHNICAL TEAMS carry winning records into 2013. North Tech Boys took a 9-3 record and a six-game winning streak to a Jan. 8 home game against Barat Academy. North Tech Girls are 5-3 and have a Jan. 10 home game against Barat Academy three weeks after a 67-60 Dec. 20 win at Cahokia, Ill.

INCARNATE WORD ACADEMY carries an 11-0 record to a Jan. 7 game at 10-2 Miller Career Academy then visits Nerinx Hall Jan. 10 at 6:30. IWA won the Visitation Academy Tournament for the fifth year in a row, over St. Joseph’s Academy.
