By Jim Wieners

Hazelwood Central sophomore Clayton Janvrin took fifth place in One-Meter Diving at the Missouri State High School Boys Swimming And Diving Championships Nov. 10 at the St. Peters Rec-Plex.

Janvrin scored 340.15 points after about 15 dives as he helped Hazelwood Central scored 14 points which was good enough for a two way tie with Park Hill for 33rd place. Janvrin finished 75.5 points behind state champion David Knopke, a freshman with state team champion Kansas City Rockhurst.

With 30 divers competing in the One-Meter event Janvrin was third (167.90) after five preliminary dives that cut the semifinal dive list to 20. Janvrin made the final cut to 16, which qualified him to accumulate team points for Hazelwood Central despite the fact that the 240.30 total through 10 dives, five in the semifinals had him placed eighth. However his fifth-place finish after the final round assured Janvrin of a state medal.

Janvrin qualified for state in a Sept. 19 Hazelwood Central dual meet against Wentzville-Timberland. Janvrin scored 248.35 points in the six dives he took, which not only exceeded the 210-point minimum but was the fourth best in state, according to the Direct Athletes website, used by MSHSAA Swimming and Diving teams to list state qualifiers.
