Hazelwood Central Boys Basketball has played six games so far and the Hawks have won those six games.
After a win over Troy Buchanan and winning the Vianney-Jerry Boeckman Memorial Tournament the Hawks defeated Columbia-Hickman, 66-46 and Jefferson City, 55-51. Last Friday against visiting Jefferson City the Hawks overcame a 24-13 first-quarter deficit by outscoring the Jays, 42-27 in the final three quarters. The game ended just hours before the weekend snowstorm arrived in St. Louis.
“This is a tough game,” said Hazelwood Central head coach Josh Martin. “Jeff. City came out to play (and) we dug ourselves out of a hole.” The Hawks trailed most of the first three quarters against the Jays.
After trailing by 11 after one quarter “We tightened up defensively,” Martin said. “That put us back in the game.” Nine players scored but none in double figures as Marcus Johnson and Josh Richards each scored eight to lead the Hawks.
On Dec. 11 the Hawks traveled to Columbia, Mo., and Hickman High School and came back home victoriously over the Kewpies. Bryce Foster scored 14 points; Udoka Anuwgo added 10 while Johnson had nine assists.
“We got a long way to go,” said Martin. “We’re happy with the (6-0) start but we got to get better.”
