Incarnate Word Academy’s 10-State
Soccer Title Quest Misses Summit
By Jim Wieners
It has been nine years since Incarnate Word Academy played in and won a State Girls Soccer Championship, their Missouri State High School Activities Association record ninth since 1989.
It will have to wait until at least next year. In Kansas City, at Swope Soccer Village, Rockwood-Summit, a school that finished as state runner up three times, finally won their first state title for Chris Kappler, who coached her final game for the Falcons. Summit, on a goal by junior Lily Schneiders at 14:11, defeated IWA 1-0, June 2 in the Class 3 Final.
Summit (19-2-3) finished with 10 consecutive shutout wins and a 19-game undefeated streak (17-0-2) as well as finishing the season 15-1-1 in shutouts. It was the second time that Summit defeated the Red Knights as the Falcons won 2-1 at Incarnate on April 23.
IWA (22-7) was 16-2 in shutout games and took home their sixth runner up trophy since 1991. Summit was the fourth public high school to win their first state title at IWAs expense including Oakville (1991), Francis Howell North (1995) and Fort Zumwalt West. While Incarnate is 7-2 in first-place games against Catholic Schools (6-2 against all-girls’ schools) the Red Knights are 2-4 against Public Schools.
On June 1 at Swope Soccer Village IWA defeated first-time semifinalist Union 1-0 on a late goal by junior Alli Frederking (at 73:23). It was the Red Knights’ 15th semifinal win in 21 games. Union, meanwhile, finished fourth after losing 3-1 to Kearney in the June 2 third-place game.
On May 26, Incarnate Word Academy made their second visit to St. Dominic and the Red Knights avenged a March 27 loss (a 1-0 shut out) by defeating the Crusaders 2-1 in the Class Three Quarterfinal. It was the 21st Quarterfinal win since 1989 thanks to two goals by junior Olivia Layton including a second-half game-winner that broke a 1-1 tie. Izzy Patterson and Senior Emily Groark each had an assist for IWA while St. Dominic junior Natalie Zoellner scored a first-half Crusader goal.
IWA’s 34th consecutive MSHSAA Sectional game (36th overall) was a Class Three game on May 22 and the Red Knights shut out Villa Duchesne 1-0 at Creve Coeur Soccer Complex. Senior Maddi Pabst broke a scoreless tie with a second-half goal on set-up passes from Frederking and senior Sophie Patterson. It was the second win over Villa Duchesne as Incarnate won 3-1 at home May 2 over the Saints.
