Hazelwood West Sweeps SNC Cross Country with Stewart, Atnip Taking 1st

Hazelwood West High School dominated Cross Country team competition by sweeping the Suburban North Conference Championships Oct. 13 at Sioux Passage Park.

Hazelwood West scored 25 points in the Boys Championship finishing 27 ahead of second-place Pattonville (53) while Ritenour (73), McCluer (101) and Hazelwood East (101) were the only teams to run  at least five runners each.  Only three Girls’ teams had at least five runners as Hazelwood West, 27, was 25 ahead of Pattonville (52) and 26 ahead of McCluer (53)

McCluer North did not field a full team but two boys finished in the top five. One of the two, Nicholas Stewart, finished first at the Suburban North Championships as he managed to run the challenging Sioux Passage Park course in 17:09. Hazelwood West had six boys finish in the top 13, the top five scored team points, with Travis Staebell (17:48) finishing second, 39 seconds behind Stewart and Nelson Njogu (18:06) was third.

Hazelwood West had seven girls finishing in the top 14, the top five scored team points and Erica Atnip led the Wildcats by winning the meet with a 21:54 effort. Atnip finished 37 seconds ahead of second-place Sarah Mohrmann, Pattonville (22:31), and 39 seconds ahead of third place Emily Mitulski, McCluer (22:33).

Class Four Districts are on Oct. 20 as Pattonville competes in District Four at McNair Park, St. Charles, while the rest of the Suburban North — including Hazelwood Central, Hazelwood East, Hazelwood West, McCluer North and McCluer — will be in District Three at Blackburn Park, Webster Groves.

BOYS SWIMMING AND DIVING — Prior to October 15, two swimmers and a diver qualified to compete in the Missouri State High School Activities Association Championships, Nov. 9-10 at the St. Peters Rec-Plex, according to Direct Athletes, a web site used by MSHSAA.

McCluer North junior Nick Kuper qualified to compete in two events. Kuper qualified in the 100-Yard Butterfly Sept. 5 with a 55.91-second effort in a dual meet against Hazelwood West. One week later, in a Sept. 12 dual meet against McCluer, Kuper qualified in the 500-Yard Freestyle as he swam the longest event in 5:06.13

Hazelwood West senior Latrae Lane qualified for state Sept. 8 in the 50-Yard Freestyle at the Eudal Early Season Invitational. Lane sprinted his way to a state berth with a 22.92-second effort.

Hazelwood Central sophomore diver Janvrin Clayton qualified to dive in state Sept. 19 in a dual meet against Wentzville-Timberland. The two teams head coaches and the meet starter judged the One-Meter Diving event and Clayton impressed the judges as they scored 248.35 points, exceeding the 210-point minimum

Swimmers and Divers have until Nov. 3 for a chance to qualify for state since there are no districts.
