From Burgers to Eyes: Sonic Site to be Reborn As Eye Surgery Center
By Carol Arnett
The former Sonic Drive-in site at 8452 North Lindbergh, at the intersection with Mater Dei, will soon be torn down to make way for a new eye surgery center.
The Florissant City Council passed an ordinance that allows the surgery center at the council meeting Monday night.
The center will be affiliated with the Eye Center farther south on Lindbergh. The one story building will have 4,000 square feet. It is designed so that an additional 2,000 square feet can be easily added on toward the back of the property if the center wants to expand in the future.
The center will keep the existing curb cuts on Lindbergh and Mater Dei. In the public hearing for the project at the last council meeting, Mayor Tom Schneider said that he thought the center would be a good fit for the area, since it is near several residences on Mater Dei.
In other news, Florissant residents may soon have another option for dining out, as a representative from Chipotle Grill came before the council Monday night with a proposal to put the restaurant in the new development next to Target (the former Value City site).
Jeffrey Kaiser, an architect for the development, requested a change to the ordinance that approved the development to allow for the restaurant.
“The original plan called for a Panda Express only,” in the one outbuilding, Kaiser said. “Now Chipotle would like to come in to the development.”
Kaiser said that there was ample room for another restaurant and that the city’s requirements regarding parking would still be met.
The building housing both restaurants will be close to Lindbergh, similar to the way Bread Company is situated in front of Target.
No one spoke in opposition at the hearing. Kaiser said that if it is approved, it would be approximately three months until the restaurant is ready to open. The council held a first reading on the bill approving the restaurant.
