Hazelwood East Is McCluer’s Final District Football Game

McCluer High School will be playing their final Class Five, District Two, Suburban North Conference and home football game this Saturday at 2 p.m. when the Comets host the Hazelwood East Spartans.

McCluer closes out the season with a non-conference, non-district game at Gateway Tech, Nov. 3 at 1:30.

McCluer (5-3 overall, 3-3 Suburban North, 2-1 +18 tiebreaker points in District), according to head coach Joe Henke, knows that their chances to compete in the post-season playoffs comes down to this Saturday’s game. “We got to beat East to go,” said Henke. Even if McCluer wins the Comets’ fate would then rest on the McCluer North-Hazelwood East game, Nov 3, knowing that a two-way tie with North, because of the Comets’ 21-13 loss to the Stars, kills McCluer’s chances.

Hazelwood East (7-1, 5-0, 2-0 +26) “can beat you in a number of ways,” Henke said “East is going to beat you with their running game (but) they also got a good passing game.” DeMarco Paine is a good example of a balanced Spartan passing attack as he ran for two touchdowns and caught two touchdown passes from Eric Brown in last Friday’s 49-12 win at Troy-Buchanan (1-7, 0-2 -26) .

According to East head coach Corey Johnson the season has been a “total team effort” thanks to the effort of taking small steps. However Johnson sees McCluer as an outstanding team, a very fast but very physical team and the Comets “make a lot of plays,” he said last Friday at Troy. Last Saturday at McCluer a pair of Andre Martin touchdown runs and a tough Comet defense resulted in a 24-7 McCluer homecoming win over Wentzville-Holt (4-4 1-2 -13).

TROY-BUCHANAN AT McCLUER NORTH, SATURDAY, 1 p.m. — The start time Saturday may be moved to 2 p.m. McCluer North (6-2, 5-1, 1-1 -5) got two touchdowns each from Damonte Bell and Darius Stewart in a 28-0 non-conference, non-district win last Saturday at Roosevelt.

CLASS SIX, DISTRICT FOUR — HAZELWOOD WEST AT PATTONVILLE, FRIDAY, 7 p.m. — HAZELWOOD CETNTRAL AT RIVERVIEW GARDENS, SATURDAY 2 p.m. — The Hazelwood West-Pattonville winner will have a commanding lead and should the team they beat last Saturday wins this Saturday then the district title is also theirs. Pattonville (4-4, 3-2, 1-0 +13) won 31-7 at Hazelwood Central (3-5, 2-3, 0-1 -13) while Hazelwood West (3-5, 2-3 1-0 +13) got two Adebayo Olapo touchdowns in a 41-21 homecoming win over Riverview Gardens (1-7, 0-5, 0-1 -13).

CLASS THREE, DISTRICT FIVE — TRINITY CATHOLIC AT McCLUER SOUTH-BERKELEY — CARDINAL RITTER AT LUTHERAN NORTH — BOTH SATURDAY 1 p.m. — Marquise Hill, with four touchdowns, led Trinity (6-2, 1-0 +13) to a 32-16 win last Friday at Cardinal Ritter (3-5, 0-1 -13) and a share of the Archdiocesan Athletic Association title (5-1) with St. Dominic. Lutheran North (4-4, 1-0, +7) was a 27-20 winner last Saturday at McCluer South-Berkeley (4-3, 0-1 -7).
