Warrants Issued in the Shooting of Florissant Policeman

Warrants were issued Monday, May 28, charging Brian Lamont Cannon Jr. with the shooting of Officer Mike Vernon, the Florissant Police Department is reporting.

St. Louis County Prosecting Attorney’s Office listeed the  following charges:

Brian Lamont Cannon

• Assault in the First Degree of a Law Enforcement Officer • Armed Criminal Action • Burglary in the Second Degree.

On May 27,  at approximately 3 a.m, Florissant Police Officers responded to a call of a burglary in the 1800 block of Banstead. While searching the area for the burglary suspects, Officer Mike Vernon encountered the suspect behind 2800 North Highway 67. The suspect  fired several shots, and Officer Vernon was hit twice. Even after Officer Vernon suffered serious injuries, he was able to provide a description of the shooter,  the police reported, and after a successful K9 track, the suspect was located in the backyard of a house in the Wedgewood subdivision.

The investigation is ongoing.

Officer Vernon is being currently being treated at DePaul Hospital where he is listed in critical, but stable condition. Officer Vernon has a spinal cord injury . Officer Vernon is also being treated for additional injuries were one of the bullets penetrated his lungs.

Officer Vernon is reported to be in  high spirits, and he is determined to fight through his injuries and make a recovery.  He expressed appreciation to the community’s outpouring of support.
