Stars Take District Football Break; 4-Team Districts Begin Round-Robin

BY JIM WIENERS

While High School Football Districts began two weeks ago for teams that compete in five-team districts (and there were four of them in Class Five) the four-team districts in six classes, including four in Class Five, begin this weekend.

However two games in Missouri will involve teams that do not have an opponent in the same district but will play against a team from another district with the same problem. That is the case for McCluer North in Class Five, District Two and Roosevelt in Class Five, District Three. So to fill in the schedule McCluer North (5-2, 4-2 Suburban North Conference, 1-1 -5 Class Five, District Two) visits Roosevelt (5-2, 5-1 Public High League, 1-1 +6 Class Five, District Three) Saturday at 1:30.
Roosevelt defeated Beaumont but lost to Chaminade, in Class Five, District Three. Despite being unable to beat any team outside of the PHL Roosevelt, whose only PHL loss was to Vashon, is a good team, according to McCluer North head coach Jim Schottmueller.

“We know we must get ready to play,” said Schottmueller after his Stars were thoroughly upset last Friday at Wentzville-Holt, 33-0. Unconfirmed sources say eight players were suspended from last Friday’s game for disciplinary reasons. However, Schottmueller said the suspended players were not an excuse for the loss and that the players he had were capable of beating Holt (4-3, 3-2 GAC South, 1-1 +0 Class Five District Two) but were not prepared to stop Holt’s Kevin Paule from passing for four touchdowns and a two-point conversion, while running for another touchdown.

CLASS SIX, DISTRICT FOUR-PATTONVILLE AT HAZELWOOD CENTRAL, RIVERVIEW GARDENS AT HAZELWOOD WEST-BOTH SATURDAY, 1 p.m. — Hazelwood Central (3-4, 2-2 SNC) lost 28-0 to Hazelwood East while Pattonville (3-4, 2-2) is coming off a 30-7 homecoming win over Ritenour. Hazelwood West (2-5, 1-3) is going into Saturday’s homecoming game having snapped a five-game losing streak with a 55-14 win last Friday over Francis Howell Central while Riverview was 0-6, 0-4 prior to last Friday’s scheduled game versus Sumner. All four teams have losing overall records.

CLASS FIVE, DISTRICT TWO-HAZELWOOD EAST AT TROY-BUCHANAN, FRIDAY, 7 p.m. -WENTZVILLE-HOLT AT McCLUER, SATURDAY 1 p.m. — Hazelwood East (6-1, 5-0 SNC, 1-0 +13 District) had two Eric Brown to David Cannon touchdown passes in their shutout win over Hazelwood Central. McCluer (4-3, 3-3, 1-1 +5 District) had three touchdown runs from Anthony Moore and two touchdown passes along with a two-point conversion pass from Lynex Owens in a 39-14 win last Friday at Troy-Buchanan (1-6, 1-4 GAC South, 0-1 -13 District).

CLASS THREE, DISTRICT FIVE-TRINITY CATHOLIC AT CARDINAL RITTER, FRIDAY, 7 p.m.-LUTHERAN NORTH AT McCLUER SOUTH-BERKELEY, SATURDAY, 1 p.m. — Trinity Catholic (5-2, 4-1 Archdiocesan Athletic Association) seeks a win over Cardinal Ritter (3-4, 2-3 AAA) to share first in the AAA with St. Dominic (5-2, 5-1 AAA) after last Friday’s 30-27 home win over St. Mary’s, with four Marquise Hill Touchdowns.

Lutheran North (3-4) closed out ABC League play (3-3), with a 45-27 loss last Saturday at MICDS while MS-Berkeley (4-2) closed out Suburban East Conference play (3-2) with a 10-8 home loss last Saturday to Clayton.
