Hazelwood Central High School Student Named Delegate to Environment Summit

Mahranda Chapman, a junior at Hazelwood Central High School, was selected to the Washington Youth Summit on the Environment as a National Youth Delegate. The program will take place at George Mason University, and offers “aspiring environmentalists and student leaders an unparalleled experience.” The summit takes place in June.

Chapman was nominated for the program. The program’s website explains that junior and senior students are nominated on strong academic performance, a demonstrated interest in conservation and the environment, and the ability to be an exceptional representative for their state and high school.

Chapman is involved in Student Council, theatre and the University of Missouri-St. Louis Bridge Program Saturday Academy. Her classes include honors pre-calculus and Advanced Placement U.S. History. Her favorite subjects are English and science.

“I understand science very well. It’s one of my strongest subjects,” she said. “I like medical science. One of my classes is Physiology and Anatomy.”

Chapman is hopeful that she’ll be able to attend the conference. She is in the process of registering and her family is working toward covering the cost of tuition.

Students at the conference will participate in hands-on, experiential learning through decision-making simulations. The program is designed to challenge students to solve problems and explore the creative, practical and ethical aspects of environmental issues. The program includes guest speakers who are well-known leaders in the field, such as researchers, directors and recent college graduates.

In the meantime, Chapman is focused on the future. She wants to study biology to become a doctor or work in forensics. Her college interests are Washington University in St. Louis, Syracuse, University of Missouri-Columbia and George Mason.
