About 300 people participated in the 7th Annual Adult Easter Egg Hunt last Friday (March 30) at White Birch Park. Party goers ran the gamut with ages varying from newly 21 to senior citizens. Guests were invited to bring their own coolers, food, and lawn chairs and enjoyed musical entertainment by Juke Box Productions.

Thousands of eggs were littered throughout a roped-off area behind White Birch Bay Aquatic Center for excited patrons to collect. Each person was allowed a maximum of one dozen eggs in their “basket,” which ranged from plastic grocery bags to hand embroidered baskets.

Though winning eggs were random, everyone’s superstitious methods came out as to how they collected their eggs. “Last year I was too decisive on my egg picking and this year I only grabbed the ones that really stuck out to me,” said Debbie Bartholomew.

Amongst a myriad of tactics, some grabbed the first 12 eggs they saw while other egg-hunters chose all of the same colored eggs. Inside each egg was a paper ticket and if responsive to the black light sensitive ink was found to be a winner.

If a participants egg was indeed a winner they were given a prize on the spot. Prizes this year included a Craftsman tool set, a fire pit, household items such as a Shark hand held vacuum, media player, and other novelty items.

There were also three raffles held during the night. The grand prize winner took home an adult bike and two runner ups got season passes to White Birch Bay Aquatic Park, which opens its doors on May 26.

Such a large turnout was attributed to this year’s unseasonably warm weather. Darryl Miller, recreation supervisor for the City of Hazelwood Parks Department, said  “The weather has been a big factor this year. It was super cold weather last year. We’ve sold 150 tickets in the past three days and we maxed out at 300.”

Besides the weather, there were many different motives for coming to this year’s event. Some were annual egg-hunters, while others were novices. Jaron Gant ,27, of St.Louis, explained “My wife and I thought we would do something different this year. Every year we do things with the kids so we decided to come out and have a little fun without them this year.”

After the Easter festivities Lantis Fireworks and Lasers put on an amazing fireworks display. Eric Parks, 29, of Florissant, commented “It was an excellent show especially for this time of year. I was very surprised that it was such a big show.”
