Fitness Together: A Sharing Experience

BY DIANE RABE, CLUB FITNESS

Maybe you are someone considering making a commitment to fitness, good nutrition and a healthy lifestyle. Maybe you are someone who has made fitness, nutrition and health part of your life already. Whoever you are, consider extending yourself out to someone else for support, encouragement and companionship on your journey to good health!

It’s true. People who work out together, support each other in good eating habits, and commit to healthy lifestyles together tend to have a much higher success rate in attaining their goals. Those who “go it alone” have a more difficult time changing life habits and are more prone to giving up on themselves.

Having a partner in fitness and health helps keep one accountable for work outs, for nutritional journaling, and/or weekly weigh-ins. People find it much harder to cancel a work out they have scheduled with a friend than to “skip” a work out they were going to do on their own. Also, supporting each other by sharing nutrition journals, healthy recipes and meals is a great way to stay motivated and get feedback during the process of change.

The emotional support of a partner is also invaluable during this transition from old habits to new habits. Having someone to share feelings with makes the process of change so much easier and fun! Sharing one another’s successes continues to reinforce the action and sharing the challenges makes them not seem so hard.

Many times, fitness and good eating habits are NOT practiced by one’s family, work mates or social friends. Thus, reinforcement by one’s fitness partner may be the only positive feedback and support that is received.

So, whether you are a veteran to fitness or a novice, consider sharing your journey with someone. If you don’t know someone who is working toward better health, just start letting others know that YOU are….pretty soon you will find someone who can give and receive the encouragement you both need! Remember, statistically you will have much greater success and, emotionally, a much richer experience.
