Eating Well Gets Easier In Ferguson

With obesity on the rise and belts fitting a little tighter after the holidays, Ferguson restaurants are making it easier for their diners to keep their New Year’s resolutions to eat healthier. Eat Well Ferguson is a program created by the Live Well Ferguson initiative and local restaurants that works to offer healthier food choices. Participating restaurants identify the healthy meal choices on their menus and display an Eat Well Ferguson sticker on their front window to let diners know that they will have healthy options inside.
Eat Well Ferguson restaurants offer reasonable portion sizes and use healthier ingredients including produce that is grown locally in season. The meal choices that these restaurants have identified as being healthy have ingredients such as whole grains, lean proteins, full servings of fruits and vegetables and healthy fat sources such as unsaturated plant oils, nuts or fish.
Participating Eat Well Ferguson restaurants include Ferguson Brewing Company, Whistle Stop, Cork, Vincenzo’s, El Palenque and Paul’s Market. The Eat Well Ferguson project was developed with support from Trailnet, the Saint Louis University Department of Nutrition and Dietetics and Live Well Ferguson. Live Well Ferguson is the City of Ferguson’s active living and healthy eating initiative to improve resident health.
The restaurants participating in Eat Well Ferguson aren’t just encouraging their customers to eat better. They’re also encouraging people to exercise more. Many of these restaurants are sponsoring the 3rd annual Ferguson Twilight 5K on May 19, 2012.
This community event draws over 1,000 runners and walkers each year to race through the streets of Downtown Ferguson each May with proceeds benefiting youth scholarships at the Emerson Family YMCA .
Runners and walkers of all ages and fitness levels will take to the streets on a USATF certified course for the only twilight run/walk event in North St. Louis County.
The 5K and one-mile races start and finish at Plaza at 501, an outdoor entertainment area at the intersection of Florissant Road and Suburban Avenue. The post-race festivities include a concert, vendors and specials at local restaurants.
