Two of the Hazelwood School District’s three high schools, East and Central, open the 2007 Football season on Saturday afternoon, Sept. 1, with 1 p.m. games while defending Suburban North Conference Champion McCluer North begins Friday night, Aug. 31 at 7 p.m.
Hazelwood East opens their season at Gorzynski Field against defending Metro Catholic Conference champion CBC, who was second to Blue Springs South in Class Six State. Hazelwood East was 8-2 overall last year including a 35-12 win at CBC and was 5-2 in the Suburban North losing only to Hazelwood Central and McCluer North. CBC, 4-0 in the MCC and 11-2 overall, won 11 straight after their loss to East the Cadets won a Class Six Quarterfinal game over Hazelwood Central, 49-21.
The CBC-East game is the only Saturday game for CBC.
Meanwhile Hazelwood Central begins a rebound attempt after their loss to CBC when the Hawks host O’Fallon, Ill. Hazelwood Central was 9-2 overall and second in the Suburban North Conference with a 6-1 record. Other than losing to CBC the Hawks lost their only Suburban North game to McCluer North, 43-21. O’Fallon, who took Hazelwood Central to double overtime before losing 28-21 in Illinois last year, was 4-3 in the Southwestern Conference, 5-5 overall and was a first round loser in the Illinois Class 7A playoffs.
O’Fallon High will open the 2007 season one week before Hazelwood Central as O’Fallon opens their season this Friday, 7 p.m. at home, against Pekin. The Hazelwood Central game is the only game not being played on a Friday for O’Fallon. Next year Missouri high schools will open the same week as Illinois high schools thanks to a vote, last April by Missouri State High School Activities Association member institutions that field 11-man football teams, which would double the number of post-season playoff teams.
Meanwhile McCluer North, whose hopes for their first ever undefeated season were dashed in a 28-7 Class Five State Semifinal road loss to eventual State Runner up Kirkwood, opens the 2007 season with a Friday night game at Pattonville Stadium. The Stars will battle Suburban North rival Pattonville High.
Last year McCluer North (11-1 overall, 7-0 Suburban North) opened up their run to state with a 44-6 demolition of Pattonville and the Stars won their first nine games by double-digit margins. Then McCluer North had to rally from behind Hazelwood East and took the game to overtime where Tom Latimore’s 27-yard field goal gave the Stars a 38-35 win and the Class Five, District Two title. McCluer North, in the Class Five Quarterfinals had to withstand a late Parkway West rally for a 35-33 win.
Pattonville was 4-3 in the Suburban North, 7-3 overall last year. The Pirates lost only to Hazelwood Central, Hazelwood East and McCluer North.
