Christian Care Home to Celebrate 100th Anniversary

Christian Care Home in Ferguson will celebrate 100 years of serving the elderly in North County with a reception on Saturday, Sept. 17, from 1-4 p.m.

The Christian Woman’s Benevolent Association expanded its ministries to providing appropriate facilities for the elderly in 1911. In 1903, the association organized Christian Hospital.

In the late 1960s, the association sold its interest in Christian Hospital which made possible the construction of a four-story elder care facility in Ferguson. That facility has served the community since 1975.

Recent building codes for skilled nursing facilities made it necessary to replace the existing building. In the spring of 2009, construction began on a new one-story facility. The new facility opened in August 2010.

Christian Care Home provides 150 skilled nursing beds; a therapy department for physical, occupational and speech rehab; renal dialysis unit; a reminiscent unit for memory challenged residents; a 28-bed residential care unit; and a chapel and a full-time chaplain.

The reminiscent unit for the memory challenged has a special outdoor garden with a walking path and park benches for the residents and their guests. It is fenced and gated to protect the residents from wandering away into city traffic. The living unit has a private dining room, a lounge with an electric fireplace and a large screen television.

The residential care unit features a comfortable lounge with an electric fireplace, large television, patio, sun room porches, private dining room, laundry facilities, and a snack kitchen.

Christian Care Home is located at 800 Chambers Rd. in Ferguson. Tours are available and visitors are welcome. For information, call 314-522-8100. The phone number of the Christian Woman’s Benevolent Association’s office is 314-521-0599.
