Cheryol Mitchell Named Hazelwood Central’s Interim Principal

The Hazelwood School District Board of Education approved a recommendation to hire Cheryol Mitchell as the interim principal for Hazelwood Central High School.  Darrell Strong, who served as the principal at HCHS since 2008, was promoted to the position of assistant superintendent for learning for HSD.

Mitchell has more than 25 years experience in education, serving most recently as an assistant principal at Hazelwood West High School. Prior to her work at HWHS, Mitchell was an assistant principal at Hazelwood Central High School.

“Dr. Mitchell will be an excellent leader for Hazelwood Central High School,” said Superintendent Steve Price.  “She has an extensive background in education, particularly in administration at the high school level. She is well-known and respected by the HCHS community, having been a leader in the building for two years.”

While serving as an assistant principal at HWHS, Mitchell coordinated the Advanced Placement program and professional development for staff. She has experience in developing a master schedule, managing technology needs and serving as a mentor to administrators and teachers. She also served as the interim building administrator and assistant summer school principal at Hazelwood East High School.  She has taught science and math.

She earned a bachelor’s degree and master’s degree from University of Missouri-St. Louis. She earned administrative certification from Lindenwood University and a doctorate in educational administration from Maryville University.

She has earned recognition for her work, including STAR teacher awards and outstanding teacher awards. She received the Council of International Educational Exchange and U.S. Department of State Recognition in 2009-2010 for her work with the foreign exchange program at HCHS.

Mitchell will begin her new role immediately.
