By Randy Gardner
Have you ever felt like you are just drowning in everyday life, I think everyone feels that way now and then. I was once told that I needed to say no to people sometimes, that there is just not enough time in a day or week to get everything done and please everyone.
For me that is very difficult. I feel that when someone asks you to do something they are in need of help. Over the past month or so, I can truly see why people fall into a rut that they can not get out of.
The months of April, May, and June for me are filled to the gills but adding about 10 projects on top of all of them including life and a family are taking a toll.
I was doing so well with losing 20 pounds running everyday for the triathlon and feeling great but now the lack of sleep and stress has caused me to lose desire to even do the triathlon.
I can’t sleep at night due to all of the distractions.
I know this is bad for my health but I keep telling myself, as soon as this project is over or this week is done, I will be fine. The reason I bring this up is that I know that a lot of people feel the same way but don’t express it. I have the opportunity to express it through this column.
I have been trying to calm myself down, take deep breaths and forget about the chest and back pains as I know they are just being caused by stress. Everything will get back to normal in about two weeks and I hope I will go back to the fun loving man I try to be. If you are like me, keep your head up and strive to always do your best. They always say, what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger, I hope.
Relate the feelings I am feeling to the tremendous athletes of today. I think this is why I brought this topic up. For me, I put all of the pressure on myself. Athletes are constantly being hounded by the fans and the media about every little thing they do.
They are critiqued constantly like this under intense scrutiny for every at bat or fielding mistake. Yes, they get millions of dollars, but they deserve it, they are at the highest level of sports and entertainment there is.
I think this is why many people feel like they can’t be to judgmental about athletes because they know they are under tremendous amounts of pressure to perform and be great. If the pressure is anything like what I have felt over the past few months, these athletes deserve even more than what they already receive. Remember to keep your head up, it isn’t always as bad as it seems, Greatness is just around the corner when you work hard.
