Special District Honors Hazelwood West Teacher

Special School District of St. Louis County honored Chris Holmes of Hazelwood West High School with a Special Ambassador Award for “demonstrating an extraordinary commitment to the students and/or staff of SSD.” The honor was presented at the annual SSD Salutes Banquet.

Holmes, who teaches journalism, was nominated for the award by colleagues Denise Inman and Madonna Pelechek, SSD teachers.

The nomination praised his sincerity, professionalism and inclusion efforts.

“Chris is an enthusiastic and devoted teacher who welcomes all students with disabilities in his classroom and celebrates the unique gifts of each student. He helps them find outlets in which they can be creative and express themselves. Projects and assignments are based on the students’ individual talents and interests, and Chris helps them develop those skills, whether it is writing, photography, art, or just having the social interactions that many take for granted. Students have a safe haven, a place where they can be themselves and where they are accepted and appreciated.”

Holmes said the award was “humbling and a little embarrassing” but he was thankful for the honor and gave praise to his family and colleagues for their influence.
