Boys Tennis Districts Now Include Team, Individual Tournaments

By Jim Wieners

High School Boys Tennis will experience a new way of playing district tournaments and that will start on May 9.

Until last year singles and doubles play dominated district tournaments, and team scores determination which teams compete for state titles. This year there will be two types of district tournaments, team tournaments and individual (singles, doubles) tournaments. As a result there will be 16 districts in each of the two classes instead of eight.

In Class Two Riverview Gardens will host Class Two, District Six, with Hazelwood Central, Hazelwood East, McCluer North and McCluer competing. Class Two, District Five will be hosted by Parkway North with Hazelwood West, Parkway Central, Pattonville and Ritenour in that field.

Elsewhere in Class Two CBC hosts District Four with Chaminade, DeSmet, Ladue-Horton Watkins and Parkway West competing while St. Louis University High hosts District Two with Kirkwood, Roosevelt, Vianney and Webster Groves competing. Meanwhile in Class One Lutheran North will compete in District Six against tourney host St. Charles West and four other teams — Duchesne, Lutheran-St. Charles County, St. Charles and St. Dominic.

Team district tournaments are scheduled of May 9-13. As of May 1 seedings, pairings, dates and sites of team district matches were not made. Each dual match consists of as many as six singles matches and as many as three doubles matches in best of three sets with “No Ad” scoring.

Teams that win district tournaments will advance to the sectional round on May 21 or a day or two before it. Winners from Districts One, Five, Nine and 13 will host the team sectional tournament. The sectional championship team advances to the State team tournament, May 26 at the Cooper Tennis Complex, Springfield, Mo.

Individual (Singles, Doubles) District Tournaments are to be done no later than May 14. Starting dates are not determined but it is likely to be played after team tournament play closes. Each school in their district will send two singles players and two doubles teams but each player can play only in singles or doubles play, not both. Singles and Doubles seedings are not available as of May 1.

The top two singles players and the top two doubles team in the district tournaments will advance to sectional play scheduled for May 16-18. The Individual Sectionals will be played at odd-numbered district sites (One, Three, Five, Seven, Nine, 11, 13 and 15)

Singles and Doubles winners from one district will play against the district singles and doubles runner up and there will be only two singles and two double matches will be played in sectionals.

Winners from sectional singles and doubles matches advance to the state tournament to be played May 27-28 at Cooper Tennis Complex, Springfield.

On April 30 Hazelwood West won the Suburban North Tournament held at Forestwood Park, Ferguson.
