Tie Vote Certified in Florissant Ward 6

Election Board Confirms Tie Vote in Florissant’s Ward 6
City Clerk Karen Godwin received  election certification on Tuesday confirming a tie vote in Ward 6 city council race. The winners of the races now certified will be sworn in at the next City Council meeting, on Monday, April 26
The Ward 6 race was  a tie between Steve Purgahn and Pat Stinnett after a recount with both candidates getting 470 votes. A third candidate Benjamin Eye got 336 votes. The election board has officially determined that it’s a tie, Godwin said the candidates now have two choices. They can either have another election, which would be held on August 2, or they could have a drawing or other form of chance.
“It’s called election by lot,” Godwin said. State law provides the election by lot method in cases of a tie. They would probably have a drawing, Godwin said, but she added that both candidates would have to agree to this idea. If either candidate does not agree, the special election will occur. Speculation is that Stinnet wants a new election which would be Aug. 2
Also on August 2, voters in Ward 3 will vote on a new councilperson to replace Tom Schneider, who will be sworn-in as mayor April 26.                                  -Carol Arnett
