Florissant Officials Working With Local,
Stage Agencies on Flood Response
This past weekend historic rainfall amounts again hit our region. Gov. Eric Greitens has declared a state of emergency the result of the high volume of rainfall. Creeks and drainage systems quickly filled, along with the groundwater table rising, leading to sewer backups and basement flooding of some properties in Florissant
Tuesday afternoon, Mayor Tom Schneider spoke with Governor Greitens’ Chief of Operations Charlie Barnes to appeal for similar state and federal assistance that was provided after the December 2015 storm. As soon as we receive word from the Governor’s office on what the state will provide, Florissant offricials will make an announcement.
Sgt. Andy Haarmann who is in charge of the Emergency Management Commission for the city is monitoring the availability of debris removal resources to determine if any assistance will be made available to Florissant residents that have property damage as a result of flooding or sewer backup. In order to coordinate with the recovery effort, residents are asked to do the following:
- If you have had a sewer backup, contact MSD (Metropolitan Sewer District) customer service at 314-769-6260 to report the backup. The city cannot do this for you, as MSD needs specific information from you for your problem to be properly documented.
- If you have property damage as a result of sewer backup or flooding, contact Florissant’s City Engineer Tom Goldkamp either by phone at 314-839-7643 or email at tgoldkamp@florissantmo.com. He is making a log of anyone with property damage so that if programs become available we will be able to quickly apply those resources.
Mayor Schneider would like to encourage residents to sign up for the NIXLE program the city has been utilizing for almost five years. This program allows the city to send important valuable community information directly to residents using the latest technology. Subscribers can instantly receive information via cell phone text message and/or email allowing city officials to communicate with the residents during emergency situations.
For more information on this program visit www.nixle.com or contact Officer Steve Michael, community/media relations officer at 314-830-6042 or by email at smichael@florissantmo.com.
