Prep Notebook: SLUH, DeSmet Dominate Water Polo; Haz. Central LaCrosse Off to 6-2 Start

Although none of the Florissant Valley area high schools field Water Polo a pair of Catholic-Jesuit all-boys high schools have dominated the sport among St. Louis area high schools through April 17. Both have students enrolled from the Florissant and Hazelwood area.
St. Louis University High opened the season with 19 straight wins before losing their first game April 16 to Oak Park Fenwick Catholic, 17-8, in the DeSmet Invitational Championship Game at the St. Peters Rec-Plex. Fenwick is the defending Illinois High School Association State Champions and Fenwick has won eight IHSA Boys state titles in the last nine years (Fenwick Girls have won five IHSA state titles in the last seven).
DeSmet has won 23 while losing only four including a 12-4 loss April 16 to Fenwick in the DeSmet Invitational at the St. Peters Rec-Plex and DeSmet took fifth place in their own Invitational.
In the DeSmet Invitational SLUH, prior to losing to Fenwick, defeated Oakville, 21-4, Parkway North, 15-6, Rockwood-Marquette, 10-4, and Parkway West, 8-6. DeSmet, in their own tourney, defeated Lafayette, 12-5, and Palos Hills, Ill., Stagg, 12-9, and then after losing to Fenwick defeated Mary Institute Country Day School, 8-6, and Parkway North.
SLUH and DeSmet compete in the Suburban Central Conference. SLUH has already won the conference title with a 6-0 record while DeSmet is 3-2. In conference play SLUH won March 21 over DeSmet, 16-4. DeSmet’s other conference loss was April 11 at MICDS, 11-8 and their only other loss was to Oak Park-River Forest, Ill., 15-7, in the Lincoln-Stevenson, Ill., Tournament.
DeSmet played Oakville, April 19, visits Chaminade, their last conference game, April 23 at 10 a.m., and visits Clayton April 26 at 5 p.m. before participating in the Lindbergh Invitational, April 28-30. SLUH only has the Lindbergh Invitational left on their schedule, April 28-30. DeSmet and SLUH play in the final game of the Lindbergh Invitational, April 30 at 6 p.m.
Hazelwood Central Boys Lacrosse, a club sport, is off to an unofficial 6-2 start, 6-1 in the American Conference prior to an April 19 game against Webster Groves. Hazelwood Central has wins over Fort Zumwalt West, 16-4, Republic, 19-0, Springfield-Glendale, 16-2, Rockwood Summit, 9-6, Parkway Central, 9-8, and Wentzville-Holt, 18-3. The losses are to Parkway West, 8-5, and MICDS, 15-3, and Hazelwood Central has outscored the opposition, 95-46.
Hazelwood Central has upcoming road games against Columbia-Hickman (April 23), Parkway South (May 4) and John Burroughs (May 9) while having home games against Fox (Arnold) (April 28), Shawnee Mission East (April 30) and Rockwood-Marquette (May 12) Hazelwood Central home games are at Hazelwood Northwest Middle School (formerly Hazelwood Junior High).
BASEBALL-METRO CATHOLIC CONFERENCE: Four of the five Metro Catholic Conference Baseball teams have nine or more wins overall and prior to April 18 all five teams are above .500 overall. Vianney is 13-3 overall, 2-1 in the MCC, St. Louis University High is 10-0 overall but has only played one MCC game, DeSmet is 10-5 overall but is 1-2 in the MCC, CBC, defending Class Four State Champions, is 9-3 overall, 2-0 in the MCC, and Chaminade is 7-6, 1-4 in the MCC.
In the Suburban North Conference, prior to April 18, Pattonville leads with a 6-0 conference record, 6-2 overall, followed by Hazelwood Central, 5-2, 7-3, Hazelwood West, 5-2, 5-6, Ritenour, 3-3, 7-5, McCluer, 3-4, 4-9, McCluer North, 2-4, 3-5, Hazelwood East, 1-5, 2-7 and Riverview Gardens,  0-5, 2-7.
