Ferguson-Florissant Board Recognizes Monthly Excellence

The Ferguson-Florissant School District Board of Education recognized the accomplishments of students and staff at its monthly board meeting on April 13.
Supy. Jeff Spiegel said he believes the recognitions are a good reminder to the board and district as a whole about the reason they exist – to serve students. He added, “It also gives us an opportunity to smile before we address routine board business.”
Those honored were:
McCluer North’s Drew Mueller, a junior, placed second in the nation for his age group and tenth overall in the 2011 U.S. National High School Racquetball   Championships in St. Louis. This is the second year in a row that Drew won these honors. Drew competed against top-ranked high school males in singles matches and brought home a silver medal.
McCluer North Boys Basketball Team captured the 2011 Class 5 State Championship. The board congratulated the team on its 10-point triumph over Troy (63-53) to win the Class 5 State Championship at the University of Missouri-Columbia in March. The last time the Stars won the title was in 2007. Determined to shine after facing defeat against Suburban North Conference foes, the Stars victoriously battled the same rivals to earn the trip to Columbia.
Lakenya Hemphill, a third-grader at Cool Valley Elementary School, received the artistic competition’s Maestro award, the top honor, for her artwork inspired by Pyotr II’yich Tchaikovsky’s “Capriccio Italien, Op. 45,” of the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra’s Picture the Music 2011: Integrating Music and Visual Arts contest.
Aubree McBride, a sixth-grader at Halls Ferry Elementary School, was also a winner. These students received blue ribbons or special recognition awards. The students’ accomplishments are significant, because more than 13,000 students entered the competition. The top 100 entries will be on display at The Magic House until April 21.
Commons Lane Elementary School team earned the first-place trophy in the Ferguson-Florissant School District’s 17th annual Elementary Scholar Bowl competition. Team members include fifth-graders Abdullah Brown-El, Sephode Ekpelu and Trinity McCaw and sixth-graders William Bump, Robert Coleman-Grayson, Jared Edwards and Christina Fritz.
Abdullah Brown-El also won the first-place trophy in the Individual Championship category of the rigorous academic competition. The board also wishes to acknowledge Julie Frankel, counselor and the team’s coach, and Barbara Wright, principal, for encouraging the team’s success.
The board commended the 2011 Ferguson-Florissant School District Spelling Bee participants. The first-place grade level winners from each elementary and middle school competed for the title of “Spelling Bee Champion.” The first-place elementary school winners include the following: Kelsie Johannsen, a fourth-grader at Combs, Abdullah Brown-El, a fifth-grader at Commons Lane, and Timara Williams, a sixth-grader at Johnson-Wabash.
The first-place middle school winners include the following: Brittany DeSha, a seventh-grader at Cross Keys Middle School and Jared Williams, an eighth-grader at Berkeley Middle School. Last but not least, the district’s Spelling Bee Champion is Isaac Orbin, a fifth-grader at Wedgwood Elementary School. Each winner received a trophy in honor of the achievement. In addition, Isaac’s name will appear on a plaque in the board room that lists previous champions.
OASIS Tutors Honored for up to a Decade of Service. OASIS volunteers are trained in reading and language arts and spend at least one hour each week tutoring kindergarten through fourth-grade students. Tutors who have volunteered at least five years include: Dolores Eberle (Robinwood), Stephanie Haffer (Wedgwood), Sharon McClintock (Parker Road), and Desi Moore (Wedgwood). Last but not least, Carol Peck (Vogt) and Lenore Timken (Combs) have dedicated ten years to the program. These volunteers will be recognized by OASIS at its annual appreciation luncheon scheduled for 11:30 a.m. on May 5 in the Staff Development Center.
