Strong ACT Scores Continue to Rise in Hazelwood District

(Posted April 12, 2011)
High school students in the Hazelwood School District are on the move when it comes to scores on the ACT college entrance exam.
Among currently enrolled students at Hazelwood Central, Hazelwood East and Hazelwood West high schools who have taken the ACT, 16 seniors and a junior scored 30 or higher on the exam since June 2010. The highest possible score on the ACT is 36.
The ACT website, www.actstudent.org, notes that less than one-tenth of 1 percent of 2010 graduates who took the test earned a perfect score. The national average composite score in 2010 was 21; in Missouri, the average composite was 21.6
Data from HSD shows that of the 821 seniors who took the exam, 31 percent scored at or above the national average. Of the 168 juniors who took the exam, 32 percent scored at or above the national average.
In the first four test dates of 2010-2011, 14 students earned significant scores.
The Missouri Higher Education Academic Scholarship Program, also referred to as Bright Flight, is a merit-based program that encourages top-ranked high school seniors to attend approved Missouri post-secondary schools. The minimum qualifying score is subject to change annually, but it is typically a score of 30 or 31 on the ACT. Scores are different for the SAT.
High scorers of 30 or more from Hazelwood Central include Andrea Smith, Connor McPartland, Jacob Shoemake, Brittany Temple and Andrew Wendel.
Brian Pickens of Hazelwood East High School earned a top score.
Students from Hazelwood West include Allison Buenemann, Joshua Merlenbach, Cody Jarvis, Brett Lesinski, Nicolas Smith, Timothy Wilson, Nicholas Alexander, Rebecca Bischoff, Paige Hurtt, Kelly Johnson and Marshall Watkins.
More students are expected to score 30 or above on the ACT for the remaining test dates of the school year. Exam dates are scheduled in April and June.
