McCluer North’s Eaves, Papes Are State Bound in Boys Tennis Doubles

A McCluer North Boys Tennis doubles team has qualified to compete in the Missouri State High School Activities Association championships May 25-26 at the Cooper Tennis Complex in Springfield, Mo.

Ricky Eaves and Zack Papes will be going to state as the only representatives from a Suburban North Conference high school. Eaves and Papes qualified for state as a result of being a finalist in Class Two, District Three. Eaves and Papes finished as District Three runner up in Class Two losing to a St. Louis University High doubles team of Andrew Vatterott and Andrew Nelson, 6-4, 6-1.

The singles final was an all-SLUH affair as Abe Souza “double-bagled” teammate A.J. Koller, 6-0, 6-0.

SLUH won the district team title with 35.5 points, McCluer North took second with 21, Hazelwood West and Parkway North each had 18.5 points but, unfortunately this writer does not know the tie breaker (sorry), Hazelwood West was awarded third place while Parkway North was fourth. Ritenour was fifth (11) followed by Hazelwood Central (9), Pattonville, (9), Riverview Gardens (8.5), McCluer (6.5) and Hazelwood East (2.5).

McCluer North was to host Hazelwood West May 15 in the team tennis regional round. The winner plays this weekend, dates unannounced at press time, in the team sectionals against Parkway Central or Francis Howell North. SLUH, who played Parkway North on May 15, is to host the team sectionals and quarterfinals while the state semifinals and finals are held May 24 in Springfield.

BOYS GOLF — The MSHSAA State tournament was played May 14-15. The Hazelwood West golf team and McCluer golfer Corey Herchenroeder competed in Class Four at Fremont Hills Country Club in Springfield, Mo. For results go online at www.mshsaa.org, go to activities and click on “Golf” then go to “Golf -Boys” and click on “2007 Class Four.”

TRACK & FIELD — Districts in Classes Three and Four and Sectionals in Classes One and Two took place last Saturday. McCluer North (Class Four) and Mary Institute-Country Day School (Class Three) hosted District meets while Principia hosted the Class Two Sectional. Sectional meets this Saturday for Florissant Valley Area teams are at Chaminade (Class Four) and MICDS (Class Three) while Classes One and Two are this Friday-Saturday at Lincoln University’s Dwight T. Reed Stadium, Jefferson City.
