Weather Won’t Dampen the Spirit Of Opening Day

By Randy Gardner

Opening Day is here and not a day to soon. As I write this column early in the week it is on the verge of snowing again. Usually when I think of opening day, it is nice and warm with some sun breaking through the clouds, perhaps not this year though. The forecast is for cold weather.

Will it dampen the festivities? I really don’t think so as the Cardinal fanatics will show up in full force to support the Birds. I am really curious to see what will happen when Albert Pujols comes around in the car. Will he be loudly cheered like in the past or will there be some boos? I honestly think you are going to hear some boos out of the crowd. If you look up and down this roster on paper, we have one heck of a team, how that will translate to the field and the grueling long schedule, well that is another story.

I just keep telling myself that it will warm up soon and that we will be watching the Birds play on days where we will all be wearing sunscreen and complaining that it is too hot. Trust me, that day will come soon.

Over the weekend I had a chance to talk to some medical professionals about shoulder injuries; these are injuries that athletes get along with the general public also, including my father.

The injury is a rotator cuff and they can be as painful as any injury one could ever have. The only way to fix this injury is through surgery to hook back and cover the shoulder ball again. That’s  in layman’s terms, not medical terms. I bring this up because so many people out there are afraid to get something fixed in an operation because of the downtime in your life.

Do they that it will just fix itself;  most injuries don’t they only get worse. So some advice, think about yourself and your health for a moment and get yourself fixed up and get back to a better life. It may be some inconvenience for awhile but you will be better off in the long run.

Now that golf season is here, I love to see these people who pull a club out of their bag and put it behind their shoulders turn to the left and then to the right and then they are ready to go. Look at a golf swing, it is one of the most violent adjustments of the body, back and hips that you can ever do.

Think about it and stretch a bit more next time you play golf. Also, just because you dress like a golfer doesn’t mean you are one. I love to see these golfers that have the $200 coordinated outfits on and have a 2 dollar swing and game.

I am terrible at golf and I take a lot of pride in my horrible game. Remember in life and golf, be yourself, don’t try to impress everybody. Let your true actions talk for your personality and what you stand for. Nobody likes the showoff or the one who is only out for themselves. You all know somebody like that, maybe its you.

Bradley Senior Gains is All-Conference

Bradley senior Mary Goldkamp (Florissant Mo./McCluer North) earned her fifth all-conference honor of her career, finishing third in the mile at the 2011 State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Indoor Track & Field Championship.  She also finished fourth in the 800 meters and was part of a sixth-place 4×400 relay team.

Goldkamp finished two and half seconds behind mile champion Tonya Nero of Wichita State to capture indoor all-conference honors for the second consecutive year after a third-place showing in the event.  In the 800 meters, Goldkamp won her prelim heat on Saturday and finished fourth in Sunday’s final with a time of 2:13.87
