The Ferguson-Florissant School District Board of Education honored the accomplishments of students and staff at its monthly board meeting on Wednesday, March. 9.
Supt. Jeff Spiegel said he believes the recognitions are a good reminder to the board and district as a whole about the reason they exist – to serve students. He added, “It also gives us an opportunity to smile before we address routine board business.” The following is the list of board recognitions:
McCluer and McCluer North Students will attend Missouri Fine Arts Academy. The board congratulated the 14 students accepted into the 2011 Missouri Fine Arts Academy (MFAA). The highly-selective MFAA provides enrichment in the arts combined with cultural, recreational and leadership development activities. The three-week summer program, held at Missouri State University beginS June 5,
Honored were McCluer High School (MC) sophomores Dereis Lambert, Kristen McPike and Alexis Tucker; and juniors Larry Chandler, Brianna Reed and Tianna Reed. The board also congratulated McCluer North High School (MN) sophomores Kamaria Keely and Keith Overall; and juniors Jamie Hudson, Anna Marxkors, Lindsay Moody, Tyler Price, Anissa Quilling and Kelly Wilson on this achievement.
MN’s Suzanne Harlamert Tapped as Des Lee Orchestra Conductor. The board commends Suzanne Harlamert, orchestra teacher at McCluer North High School, on being nominated as the conductor of the annual E. Desmond Lee Middle School Honors Orchestra. Harlamert was nominated by her peers for the post, which is filled each year by a ‘master clinician.’ The 100-member honors orchestra is composed of top orchestra students from nearly twenty school districts and archdiocese schools.
Bermuda’s Leo Ganahl was honored as the FFSD 2011 Teacher of the Year. The board applauded Leo Ganahl, third-grade teacher at Bermuda Elementary School, on being selected as the Ferguson-Florissant School District’s 2011 Teacher of the Year. Ganahl, who has taught in the district for six years, is the first male elementary school teacher to receive the coveted award
McCluer’s Ken Holzapfel Is the SSD’s 2011 Teacher of the Year. The board salutes Ken Holzapfel, special school district (SSD) teacher at McCluer High School, on being selected as the SSD’s 2011 Teacher of the Year. Holzapfel was nominated by SSD Director Vicki McNamara and chosen as one of the SSD’s 10 Key to the Classroom award winners by a selection committee. This award recognizes the achievements of 10 excellent educators. A second committee singles out the most distinguished

The board lauded Meaghan Juergens, area coordinator, on earning the Special School District’s (SSD) 2011 Lasting Impression award for outstanding SSD employees. Juergens facilitates SSD services at Airport, Central, Combs, Duchesne and Robinwood Elementary Schools in the Ferguson-Florissant School District.
The Lasting Impression award recognizes the achievements of dedicated individuals, working both in and outside of the classroom, who stand out in their role at SSD. The award is for SSD staff who are not classroom teachers or paraprofessionals (teacher assistants, teacher aides, certified occupational therapy assistants and physical therapy assistants). As a recipient of the honor, Juergens was also recognized at the SSD Salutes banquet on March 2 at Andre’s West, l, in Fenton.
