Hazelwood West Golf Team Wins District Meet, State-Bound May 14

Hazelwood West High School Boys Golfers will try to represent the Florissant Valley area May 14-15 in the 68th Missouri State High School Activities Association Championships in Springfield, Mo.

Hazelwood West will compete in the Class Four State Championship meet at Freemont Hills Country Club after winning the District Three championship May 1 at Crystal Springs Quarry Golf Course in Maryland Heights.

The top four golfers for Hazelwood West combined to score 324 and were five strokes better than the top four golfers from Parkway Central (329), who qualified for state as an at-large team because five of their golfers qualified in the top 10 list of individual golfers from schools outside Hazelwood West. Class Three, District Four host Pattonville was third (348), followed by Parkway North (349), Hazelwood Central (377), Ritenour (382), McCluer North (384), McCluer (389), Hazelwood East (429) and Riverview Gardens (no team score).

Senior Cameron Hoorman, who was the top scorer in helping Hazelwood West win the Suburban North Tournament on April 27, led all Class Four, District Three scorers with a four-over par 74, two strokes better than his Hazelwood West teammate, junior Tyler Travelstead (76). Hoorman had a six-over par 78 in the Suburban North Tournament.

Other district scorers for Hazelwood West include senior Sam Bertish (87), junior Matt Pagano (87) and junior Nick McGovern (97).

Also going to Freemont Hills in Springfield, Mo., May 14-15, is Corey Herchenroeder, McCluer, who shared the 10th individual qualifying spot (87) with Ritenour’s Chad Riegel and Brian Weintrop, one of three qualifying individuals from Parkway North. Pattonville sends two golfers to state as individuals.

Lutheran North was to compete in Class Two, District Two in Troy, Mo., May 1 for a berth in State in Bolivar. Results were not available at press time. Trinity Catholic finished 10 April 30 in Class Three, District Four.

DISTRICT TENNIS — Weather permitting district tennis meets involving area teams were to conclude Wednesday, May 9. That includes all Suburban North Conference teams at Riverview Gardens (Hazelwood Central, Hazelwood East, Hazelwood West, McCluer North, McCluer, Pattonville and Ritenour) as well as Lutheran North and Trinity Catholic at Mary Institute-Country Day School.

The top four district teams advance to regional team round May 15, team sectionals and quarterfinals are the weekend of May 19 at the site of the winner of the number one or number four seed in the odd-numbered districts. State team semifinals-finals are May 24 at Springfield, Mo. The top two district singles players and doubles teams advance to state, May 25-26 at Springfield.
