Stars, Hawks, Comets To Play At Midwest Showdown Shootout

McCluer North, Hazelwood Central and McCluer Boys Basketball teams will be heading to St. Charles and the Lindenwood University’s Robert F. Hyland Arena Dec.11 for the Midwest Showdown Shootout.

McCluer North will close the six-game shootout at 8 p.m. when the Stars take on Gary Lew Wallace. Prior to that, at 6:30, Hazelwood Central will play Central Park Christian. And prior to that, at 5 p.m., McCluer will take on Chicago Farragut.

The six-game shootout starts at 12:30 when O’Fallon, Mo., based Christian High plays Imagine College Prep, St. Louis. Memphis, Tenn., schools play the next two games as Wooddale plays Branson, Mo., at 2 p.m. while Craigmont battles Soldan at 3:30.

McCluer North opened the season two weeks ago by winning the St. Francis Borgia/Pepsi Thanksgiving Tournament in Washington, Mo.

The Stars opened the tourney Nov. 24 with a 100-36 pasting of Carnahan High School of the Future, won Nov. 26 over Maplewood-Richmond Heights, 65-44, and wrapped up the tournament Nov. 27 with a 92-75 win over University City.

B.J. Young is off to a hot start with his shooting as he averages 34 points per game, making 78 percent of his shots including 87 percent from inside the three-point arc and has made over 72 percent of his free throws. Young has also helped the Stars with his 30 assists in three games, 10 per game. Jordan Granger anchors the Stars defense with 46 rebounds, over 15 per game, and 18 blocked shots, six per game, while Akintoye Okunrinboye has 17 steals, nearly six per game.

Hazelwood Central, after opening the season with an 83-65 win Nov. 23 at Troy-Buchanan, won the Vianney/ Jerry Boeckman Invitational for the seventh straight year. The Hawks opened with pool play Nov. 29 with a 65-41 win over host Vianney, and then continued pool play Dec. 1 with a 76-66 win over Belleville (Ill.) West. In the Dec. 3 championship game the Hawks clobbered Clayton, 86-56.

Tre Anderson has averaged over 16 points per game, making 26 shots from the floor and hitting 65 percent of his free throws. Curtis Churchman, over 12 points per game, has 17 assists and 12 steals.

McCluer took third place in the Pattonville Tournament and will be playing Dec. 10, 6:30, at Jennings, a team McCluer defeated 82-53 in the opening round of the Pattonville Tournament, Nov. 29. After losing Dec. 1 in the semifinals on a last second shot to CBC, the Comets rebounded Dec. 3 with a 64-41 win over Lafayette in the third place game. Prior to the Pattonville Tournament McCluer, Nov. 26, lost 76-56 to O’Fallon, Ill.

In the opening-round win at the Pattonville Tournament over Jennings Shaquille Boga scored 21 points and had five assists while Shacquille Edwards, 17 points, pulled down 12 rebounds. Against Lafayette Boga scored 27 points while Demetrius Floyd added 21.

TRINITY CATHOLIC won the Valley Park Invitational for the second year in a row. The Titans opened the Valley Park Invitational Nov. 30 by pounding Confluence Prep Academy, 72-34, won the Dec. 1 semifinal over Metro, 68-53, and won the tournament Dec. 3 by defeating Brentwood, 62-57. Trinity began Archdiocesan Athletic Association play Dec. 7 at Kennedy, hosts Cardinal Ritter Dec. 9 at 6:20 and visits Lutheran-St. Charles County Dec. 10, 6:30 before hosting a no conference game against Riverview Gardens, Dec. 14 at 6:30.

David Minor averaged 14 points per game, has 24 rebounds and has three blocked three shots through three games. Toma Peebles, over 11 points per game, also has 24 rebound through three games, Desoto Dickson has 14 assists and Tyler Jones has seven steals.

NORTH COUNTY TECH took the consolation title at the Bank Of Old Monroe (Winfield) Classic. The Golden Eagles rebounded from a 66-59 loss, Nov. 29 to Christian High (O’Fallon, Mo.) by defeating Union, 52-40 on Dec. 2, and Warrenton, 73-59 on Dec. 3. North Tech hosted John Burroughs Dec. 7 and hosts Northwest Academy of Transportation and Law, Dec., 9 at 6:30.
