Ferguson-Florissant District Board Recognizes Excellence

The Ferguson-Florissant School District Board honored the following students and staff at its Oct. 13th board meeting.


McCluer Student Is State Ambassador at HOBY World Congress. Mark Vassell, a junior at McCluer High School, participated in the Hugh O’Brian World Leadership Congress (WLC) this summer. As Missouri’s ambassador, Vassell joined approximately 400 high school students from around the world for the intense, week-long educational program. HOBY student ambassadors leave the WLC empowered to make meaningful contributions to their communities and more aware of the world around them.

FFSD’s Challenger Learning Center Sweeps Awards Conference. The Challenger Learning Center-St. Louis (CLC) for won several awards at the Challenger Center for Space Science Education’s annual conference this summer. The CLC won the Most Students Flown, Most Public Flown and Most Total Missions Flown awards for the second year in a row. Tasmyn Scarl-Front, director, was presented with the Guiding Star award for her assistance to network CLC sites. She also earned the Achievement award for maintaining or increasing the number of students and public flown.

In addition, Heidi Lung, lead flight director, and Robert Powell, education coordinator, both received Innovation awards for the creative student programs they developed. In Lung’s “Exploring our Cosmic Neighborhood Mural Project,” students learned about space artist Robert McCall, designed and then painted their own mural, which is now on permanent display at the Challenger Learning Center. In Powell’s “The Great Rocket Design Challenge,” students formed mock companies that competed to build the best performing rocket for a chance at a $10,000,000,000 prize.

Walnut Grove Student Tapped for Jr. National Young Leaders Conference. Tyler Wilder, a sixth-grader at Walnut Grove Elementary School, attended the Junior National Young Leaders Conference (JRNYLC) last month. The weeklong-interactive leadership conference held in Washington, D.C., is reserved for “mature, high-achieving middle school students.” At the conference, Tyler participated in Leadership Focus group discussions, visited national memorials, studied leaders of the past and focused on social advocacy. The JRNYLC program is designed to educate, inspire and motivate promising young scholars to make a positive impact at home and in the community. Cathy Crooms, vocal music teacher, nominated Tyler.

McCleur North  Student Joins Monsanto’s Young Artist in Training Program. Darren Barnes, a junior at McCluer North High School, (MN) was one of 11 new students selected for the Monsanto’s Artists-in-Training program (conducted by Opera Threatre of St. Louis). Seventy-five students from the St. Louis and Metro East areas auditioned. Barnes, who is a tenor, will receive voice lessons from a local opera professor. He will also be eligible to compete for more than $10,000 in scholarships. He will make his debut performance as an artist-in-training this winter at Washington University’s Graham Chapel. His second recital is this spring at the Sheldon Concert Hall. Tracy Baker, MN’s director of choirs, for prepared Darren for the audition.
