Halloween Activities

The Missouri Botanical Garden will host Ghouls in the Garden on Sunday, Oct. 24, from 1-4 p.m., for a daytime trick-or-treat.

Families are encouraged to dress in Halloween costumes. Follow a map to discover nine themed treat stations where costumed characters await. Meet witches, vampires, mad scientists, Victorian-era ghosts, zombies and pirates. Mingle with familiar characters from Alice in Wonderland, the Addams Family and the Wizard of Oz. Collect goodies in a complimentary, reusable treat bag provided to each child while supplies last.

Hawthorne Players will present  “Voices of Valhalla:  A Hayride Through Time,” at the historic Valhalla Cemetery, 7600 St. Charles Rock Road, on Oct 15, 16, 22 and 23 beginning at 7:00 p.m.  The event will bring to life ten individuals who are interred in the historic, lovely Valhalla Cemetery on St. Charles Rock Road.

It will be a non-spooky wagon ride through the cemetery, with the wagons stopping at locations through the grounds.  Costumed actors will come forth to portray the interesting and colorful characters.

The portrayals will include a Civil War Congressional Medal of Honor winner, a superintendant of a local school district, a member of the notorious Purple Gang, one of the world’s foremost authorities on cocker spaniels, and a beauty queen who marries one of the pageant judges (and later kills him).

The one-hour hayrides begin each evening at 7 p.m.  Donations: $10.  For more information and reservations call (314) 863-3011.

The Valhalla project is a collaborative event.  The initial research for the project was done with the help of the St. Louis Genealogical Society

Lindenwood University’s Historic Daniel Boone Home Halloween event, Saturday, Oct. 23. Step into the 19th century and learn about the fear and terrors of the American Frontier. The Callaway House will be open for the first time. The first tour will begin at 6 p.m. and the last tickets will be sold at 9 p.m. Visitors will walk the lantern-lit paths through Boonefield Village and may gather at campfires for hot apple cider an a ghost story.

Admission: $7 for adults, $6 for seniors (age 55 and over), $4 for children (4-11 years). Family rates are $25 and include two adults and up to five children.

The Butterfly House presents Bootterflies Halloween Party, Saturday, Oct. 23 and Sunday, Oct. 24, from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. The party features two days of non-scary activities and crafts designed for families with children ages 3 through 10. St. Louis Mills Halloween costume contest will be held on Saturday, Oct. 30 at 1 p.m. Registration begins at 12:30 p.m. The first 200 children to register will receive Halloween treats and giveaways.

Children eight years old and younger are invited to put on their Halloween costumes early and enjoy a story celebrating the most frightfully fun holiday of year. After, kids can participate in a costume contest with prizes for Scariest, Funniest, Cutest and Best Overall.
