Voters in the the Ferguson-Florissant School District will be asked to approve a $25 million no tax rate increase bond issue on Aug. 3. If Prop A is approved by voters, the funds will be used for a variety of projects that support student achievement, pay for building repairs and upgrade student safety.
School district officials say multiple factors, including a weak economy, cuts in funding from Missouri and lower property taxes caused by falling housing values combined to drastically reduce the district’s revenue for the 2010-2011 school year.
Before asking voters to approve a no tax rate increase bond issue, Ferguson-Florissant tightened its own financial belt, slicing $15 million from this year’s budget without laying off a single employee.
Ferguson-Florissant’s bond issue has been endorsed by:
• Ferguson-Florissant National Education Association (NEA)
• Berkeley Mayor Kyra Watson
• Cool Valley Mayor V.J. Murphy
• Ferguson Mayor Brian Fletcher
•Florissant Mayor Robert G. Lowery
• North County Churches Uniting for Racial Harmony and Justice (NCCU)
• North County Incorporated
• Greater North County Chamber of Commerce
This marks the first time in eight years that the fully accredited district has put a bond issue on the ballot.
