Ferguson-Florissant Exceeds Expected Graduation Rates

A nonprofit educational research center cited the Ferguson-Florissant School District as an “urban overachiever” when it comes to graduation rates.

The EPE Research Center, a division of the nonprofit group that publishes Education Week, listed Ferguson-Florissant as one of 21 urban districts nationally that “beat the odds” by exceeding expected graduation rates by 10 percentage points or more. Ferguson-Florissant was the only Missouri district on the list.

Study findings were published in the June 10, 2010 edition of Education Week called Diplomas Count.

Researchers looked at 151 districts nationwide and applied a statistical model that matched information against 10 characteristics that included student-teacher ratio, racial composition, family income and average high school size. That data was used to predict a graduation rate for each district. Ferguson-Florissant outperformed the researchers’ expectations by 12 percent.

“We are proud to be recognized in this prestigious national publication,” said Jeffrey R. Spiegel, Ferguson-Florissant superintendent. “Preparing students for college and career success is one of our core values.”

Ferguson-Florissant’s dropout rate is about 2 percent and 85 percent of its high school graduates attend college or other post-secondary training.
