8 Class-5 Football District Winners Will Get Regional Byes This Fall

By Jim Wieners

Two years ago when the Missouri State High School Activities Association amended the football playoffs to include the top two teams advancing from each district one of the six classes had more than eight but less than 16 districts.

Class Six had eight districts so 16 teams advanced from districts to sectionals. In each of the lower four classes, One-Four, had 16 districts so 32 teams advanced from districts to regionals.  But Class Five had 11 districts for 2008 and 2009 and it ended up with 10 district winners out of 11 receiving regional round byes

This fall Class five will have 12 districts of which three of them will have five teams per district while the other nine will have four. Eight of the 12 district champions this fall — One, Three, Four, Six, Seven, Eight, 10 and 12 — will have a bye in the regional round.

Three Suburban North Conference teams — Hazelwood East, McCluer and Riverview Gardens — and a former Suburban North team, Normandy, is in one of those districts (Three) whose winner gets a Regional Round bye. The District Three Runner Up will play Nov. 3 against the District Two Runner Up — Chaminade (who defeated East last year in the Sectional Round), Parkway Central (who defeated McCluer in the Regional Round), Parkway North (State Semifinalist last year) or Webster Groves (defending State Champions). The Nov. 3 winner plays the District Three winner Nov. 8 in the Sectional

While East and McCluer were the top teams in district play, Riverview moves from Class Six, District Four while Normandy High, thanks to a merger with the now-closed Wellston-Eskridge High, moves from Class Four where they were a State Quarterfinalist. Pattonville moves from Class Five, District Three, to Class Six, District Five while in Class Six Ritenour moves from District Two to District Four replacing Riverview. Hazelwood Central (defending repeat Class Six State Champions), Hazelwood West and McCluer North stays in Class Six, District Four.

In Class Three Trinity Catholic, McCluer South-Berkeley and Lutheran North will move from District Five to District Four and Cardinal Ritter replaces John Burroughs in the district.  The district champion from one district will host the runner up from another district in the regional round in Classes One-Four, Nov. 3 and in the Class Six Sectionals Nov.5 (Nov. 6 if home team has no lights).

Sectionals for Classes One-Five will be on Nov. 8, Quarterfinals are Nov 12 for Class Six sites with lights, Nov. 13 for Classes One-Five and Class Six sites without lights, Semifinals are Nov. 19 for Classes Five-Six sites with lights, Nov. 20 for Classes One-Four and Classes Five and  Six Sites without lights. The Show-Me Bowl, at Edward Jones Dome, St. Louis, will be on Nov. 26-27, and that includes the Eight-Man Final.
