By Randy Gardner
It was so nice to have an extra day on the weekend, even though weekends are the busiest time for me as I cover events around the area.
For many, the day off on Monday is just that a day off, but lets remember why we are really off and that is to remember our veterans and those who gave the ultimate sacrifice. Veterans of past, present, and future are our real heroes in this world along with everyone who goes out there and protects our freedom.
These days our kids heroes are athletes and singers.
Should they? Maybe in a way because they are constantly in the spotlight, we really can’t get away from them but let’s be realistic, Only about 1/2 of 1 percent of college players will ever make it to the big leagues.
It is more realistic to teach your children that be a great mother or father are what heroes are. I only hope that one day, my boys will say that their dad is their hero. A man who worked really hard at what he did because he loved his profession,,along with loving his kids and his wife and family.
I really hoped you enjoyed the weekend though as I thoroughly did, especially watching the NASCAR Coca Cola 600. It is the longest race of the year and it is at one of the greatest tracks ever, Lowe’s Motor Speedway in Charlotte, NC.
It is a long one but if you are a real racing fan, it is the holidays of car racing. The weekend before, the All Star race took place and 1million dollars was given away to the winner, which was Kurt Busch. If you follow racing, I was glad to see his brother Kyle Busch crash late in the race to take him out of contention by none other than his own teammate Denny Hamlin.
In sad news, the Women’s Professional Soccer Team , the Athletica in St. Louis has already closed it doors, as last week the team just disappeared a few weeks into the season.
I have also heard that the men’s team is also in trouble financially and they haven’t even started to play. I will keep a close eye on this as you may know I am a huge soccer fan.
It’s difficult to try to understand why soccer just won’t work here in St. Louis with all of the kids that play it. I think it is going to have to be a MLS team because that stigma that goes with the professionalism of the league is what people want.
Look at the world. They want recognizable name brands, not only in sports but just look at the world of clothing. This proves my point.
