Hazelwood Modifies Annual Citywide Bulk Waste Collection Program
The City of Hazelwood has modified its annual Citywide Bulk Waste Pick-Up Program, also known as the Hazelwood Beautification Campaign. In the past, residents were able to set out unlimited quantities of bulk items at the curb for Veolia Environmental Services to collect at no cost to them. The City paid for this service.
However, like most municipalities, Hazelwood has experienced a decrease in sales tax receipts for 2009. As a result, Veolia, with cooperation from the City of Hazelwood, is still offering this service to residents – again at no cost – but there will be a limit on the number of items residents can set out at the curb for this year’s program. The pick-up schedule begins June 1 and continues for the entire month.
Each household is limited to five (5) items and each item can’t weigh more than 40 pounds a piece. Examples of acceptable bulk items include sofas, mattresses, chairs, cabinets, tables, bath tubs, sink vanities, lamps, wooden/plastic furniture, playground equipment, rugs and small TV sets. Unacceptable items consist of tires, car parts, batteries, construction materials, concrete, compost, flammable liquids, household chemicals and paint.
Every residence in Hazelwood that has single-family trash/recycling service through Veolia Environmental Services is entitled to two (2) bulky pick-ups annually at no charge. In years past, the Hazelwood Beautification bulky collection counted as one (1) of those collections for everyone, regardless of whether they actually participated or not.
For the 2010 program, Hazelwood residents will not be charged a fee for the bulk waste pick-up of the first five (5) items. However, as in the past, each household will lose one of their two free bulky collections. So, even if residents don’t participate under the new limited 5-item guidelines, one of their two bulky collections will be designated for the 2010 Hazelwood Beautification Campaign.
For those residents who have bulk items in excess of the 5-item limit, there is an option. Additional bulk volumes are available for disposal for a charge of $15.53 per 5-item quantity. For example, if a resident has 10 bulk items, the first 5 would be collected at no charge and the remaining 5 would be billed to the resident at $15.53. Any resident with more than 5 bulk items must call and notify Veolia in advance in order to schedule this pick-up request.
In addition, none of the local apartment/condo complexes will be participating in this year’s Hazelwood Beautification Campaign. They will be responsible for making their own bulk waste collection arrangements.
“We appreciate our residents for their understanding of the revisions we’ve had to make to this year’s bulk waste collection program,” said Earl Bradfield, Hazelwood city planner and coordinator of the Hazelwood Beautification Campaign. “We’re glad we were able to partner with Veolia in order to provide this service to local residents.”
