Pujols New Contract With be Huge; McGwire Didn’t Tell us Enough

By Randy Gardner

It doesn’t seem  that the St. Louis Cardinals are  having any problems, getting players and keeping them. This team is willing to shell out the bucks to put a winning team on the field and that showed with the $120 million deal  for  Matt Holliday.

Remember, Albert Pujols will be coming up for negotiation soon and I can see that deal going in the $150 to $200 million range. That is unreal but that is what these guys generate in terms of attendance and money for these franchises. They would not be getting paid that kind of money of they didn’t generate it.

What are your feelings on the whole Mark McGwire coming out? I have mixed emotions. I am glad that he finally came out and said that he did it but I don’t think he came all the way clean. Also, he did this because of the timing of having to face he St. louis fans and media.

Maybe he was waiting for this moment but it just feels like he had to do it. Even though he said he was sorry, it doesn’t make it right. He should have just been honest from the beginning and explained what he did it, I think many more people would have been forgiving of his actions.

Professional sports are a hard thing and to keep up at that level or to keep your body in every day game shape, you have to take care of it. The whole ideal of the drugs not helping him perform is crap.

If you go from hitting one home run every 14 at bats to one every 7, its helping you, and if it only gives you a 1 percent advantage over someone else, that’s still an advantage—especially in  statistics.  I look at it as cheating and all of his records should have an asterisk besides them or taken away. People cannot cheat in life, this is what will crumble society.

Rams Should Go for Offense

Finally, the Rams season has come to an end and it could not have come soon enough. Like I had said near the end of the season, play for last place and get that number one draft pick.

In a way, I was just kidding but in another way I was completely honest, and I think with the talent this team had this year it wasn’t hard for them to lose. Now what will they  do? Do they go offensively and get a Quarterback or a receiver or a lineman that can protect our QB or do they take the best player in the draft which is probably a defensive lineman.

I say go offensively, like I said in my last column, with defense you can hold another team to no points but if you cant score what is the point, the score can only be 0-0. No matter what this team does, it has to be an improvement over this year. From what I can gather from all of the fans I have talked to so far, they are willing to give this team one or two more years of growth before they totally give up on them.
