Last week McCluer North won Boys Basketball at Troy-Buchanan and Wrestling at Ritenour.
McCluer North won their fourth straight Troy-Peoples Bank Boys Basketball Invitational. The Stars defeated Suburban North Conference rival Riverview Gardens, 73-70 on Dec. 7, Troy-Buchanan, 64-39 on Dec. 9, and Columbia-Rock Bridge, 78-67 last Friday. Also the Stars played two non-tournament games and defeated Oakville, 66-53 at McCluer North Dec. 8, and won at Marion, Ill., 50-44 last Saturday.
Playing Rock Bridge, third in Class Five State last season, is “a measuring stick on how McCluer North is,” said Stars head coach Randy Reed. “This was a good win for McCluer North. It’s a stepping stone to us getting better.” In five games, Denzel Reed averaged nearly 17 points per game, Ryun Davis has over eight rebounds per game and Ollie Roundtree has a 10-6 assist average.
In Wrestling McCluer North won the Ritenour Invitational Black pool, a consolation pool last Saturday, at Costilow Fieldhouse. In Session One the Stars defeated Trinity Catholic, 61-15 but lost to Champion pool runner up St. Louis University High, 42-36. In the Black pool the Stars defeated Hazelwood East, 73-6, Herculaneum, 75-6 and Park Hills Central, 48-24. Ritenour won the Championship pool.
“We wrestled better in the end,” said Stars coach Jake Lapinski, after a sluggish start since two of the wrestlers (unnamed for privacy reasons) were taking ACT tests. Fard Harris (119 pounds), Curtis Peeples (125) and Patrick Whitener (152) each went 5-0 in the Ritenour Invitational.
HAZELWOOD EAST went 1-2 last week at the Troy-Peoples Bank Boys Basketball Invitational and was 1-4 in the Ritenour Wrestling Invitational at Costilow Fieldhouse. In Basketball East defeated Francis Howell, 51-41 on Dec. 7, while losing to Columbia-Rock Bridge, 93-46 on Dec. 9, and Troy-Buchanan, 59-44 last Friday. In Wrestling last Saturday East was 1-1 in Session One defeating Riverview Gardens, in a criteria tiebreaker following a 30-30 tie, then lost to Westminster Christian Academy, 58-12, while in the Black Pool East, 0-3, lost to McCluer North, Park Hills Central, 45-22 and Herculaneum, 48-25.
East Basketball coach Ron Banks said the Spartans “we’re young (and) still learning,” while the East wrestling team had only seven participants and coach William Henricks said those were there won the majority of matches. There were no 5-0 wrestlers, according to official results.
RIVERVIEW GARDENS took consolation honors in going 2-1 at the Troy Peoples Bank Boys Basketball Invitational while the Wrestling team was 1-4 in the Ritenour Invitational. In Boys Basketball Riverview rebounded from their Dec. 7 loss to McCluer North by defeating Wentzville-Holt, 83-72 on Dec. 9, and Francis Howell, 62-50 last Friday.
In Wrestling last Saturday Riverview lost to Hazelwood East, on criteria, and Westminster, 63-17 in Session One at Costilow Fieldhouse while in the Orange Pool in the old North Gym lost to Trinity Catholic, 48-11 and University City, 42-30, while defeating MICDS, 30-24.
TRINITY CATHOLC was 2-3 last Saturday at the Ritenour Wrestling Invitational and only Michael Taylor (112) was 5-0. In Session One at Costilow Fieldhouse Trinity lost to McCluer North and SLUH, 46-30, In the Orange Pool in North Gym Trinity lost to pool winner University City, despite a 36-36 tie, because U. City won on more pins, 2-1, after Trinity defeated Riverview Gardens and MICDS, 46-12.
