Saint Louis County Unveils New Flag Design

St. Louis County Executive Sam Page proudly unveiled the County’s new flag at Tuesday’s State of the County. The flag was designed by José Garza and Hayveyah McGowan, artists in residency with the Kranzberg Arts Foundation.
“With feedback and inspiration from the community, and the talents of José and Hayveyah, I am pleased to show you the new flag for Saint Louis County,” Dr. Page said in his address.
At the heart of the flag’s design is a modern interpretation of the iconic fleur-de-lis, a timeless symbol of our region’s historic identity and central to the new logo the County unveiled a year ago. This symbol points boldly forward, signifying a commitment to progress and opportunity as we chart the future of Saint Louis County.
The deep navy, white, and rose red pay homage to our history as well. The red reflects the vibrant transformation underway in Saint Louis County, while the blue represents the natural waterways and landscapes that define our region, symbolizing growth, sustainability, and connection. The white symbolizes unity and hope as we come together to build a brighter Saint Louis County.
Last August, Saint Louis County and the Kranzberg Arts Foundation co-hosted workshops to get feedback from the community on what they wanted to see in a new flag. The process took the better part of a year, and the common themes we heard from residents is that they wanted to see something that incorporates nature and unity while being contemporary, timeless, and pointing to the future.
“The Kranzberg Arts Foundation is proud to have played a key role in the creation of the new Saint Louis County flag. KAF facilitated the design process by connecting local artists with the community, ensuring the final design reflected the diverse voices of our residents,” said Chris Hansen, Executive Director of Kranzberg Arts Foundation.
At the beginning of 2024, Saint Louis County launched a comprehensive brand campaign to refresh and unify the County’s image, emphasizing its diverse communities, rich
history, and promising future as Opportunity Central. The cost of the flag design was covered under the original rebranding contract with Elasticity.
“By rolling out Opportunity Central last year and a new flag this year, Saint Louis County demonstrates that the government isn’t just a collection of services but a committed
partner in our community’s growth and well-being,” said Dr. Page.
