Mayor, Police Chief Report Drop In Crime for Jan.-Oct. of 2009

Mayor Robert Lowery and Police Chief William Karabas have reported that most crimes are down  “substantially” for the first three quarters of 2009 compared to January-October of 2008.

The percent decline reported by the mayor and police chief show: rape down by 4, robbery, down 3, aggravated assault, down 3, residential burglary, down 18, commercial burglary down 19, motor vehicle theft, down 41, arson down 4, simple assault down 67 and sex offenses down by 4.

Lowery and Karabas did indicate that the number of shoplifting and minor property damages continue to rise, which they say is not unusual during tough economic times.

“These numbers are encouraging, but we will continue to be vigorous in our effort to keep Florissant safe and progressive,” the mayor stated.  He asked all volunteers in the Crime Watch program to be on the alert and call the police department at 831-7000 or 911 to report any suspicious activity. “There is a great need for citizen participation,” Lowery added.
