The Book of Clarence: A Must-See Humorous Biblical Epic about Faith

By Sandra Olmsted

Somewhere between Cecil B. DeMille’s sword-and-sandal, Biblical epics and Monty Python’s snarky Life of Brian stands British writer-director Jeymes Samuel’s The Book of Clarence. In this film, which he made because he loves those big Biblical epics of classic Hollywood, Samuel contemplates Clarence’s faith in knowledge and making money versus his lack of faith in God. . . . The acting is a delight, especially Stanfield in his duel performances; however, also look for Alfre Woodard, David Oyelowo, and Omar Sy to name a few of the stellar cast that is as good at drama as they are at comedy. . . . The best thing that can be said about Night Swim is that it only runs 1 hour 38 minutes. The film has its scares in the form of standard jump-out-get-yous and frightening, ill-defined images, and writer-director Bryce McGuire takes a stab at a backstory for strange manifestations in a family’s backyard swimming pool; however, Night Swim has none of the creative use of tropes in such horror films as Amityville Horror or Blumhouse’s 2023 M3GAN. Still, as a cautionary tale about swimming alone, safely securing a pool, Artesian wells, and the evil lurking underground, Night Swim makes a fine, family-friendly horror film. . . .
