Senior Tax Relief Becomes a Realty
for St. Louis County When Bill Not Signed
St. Louis County Executive Dr. Sam Page has chosen not to sign bill #176 on senior tax relief within the 15 day deadline set out in the county charter, thus allowing the bill to become law without his signature.
This legislation opts the county into the state tax program created by SB190 providing those over the age of 67 a real estate tax freeze. According to the county’s
legislation, only seniors whose property is valued below $550,000 qualify for this program. Seniors will have to apply for the tax credit annually.
“This relief for seniors has been a long time coming. I’m glad to see St. Louis County join counties across the state in enacting this much needed legislation,” said Councilman Mark Harder. “This should give seniors a valuable tool to plan their annual finances.”
The County Revenue Department will now begin developing the specifics of how this program will be implemented next year. According to Senate Bill 190 the program becomes effective January 1, 2024.
