Jana School to remain Closed

‘No Expectations’ Jana School Will Reopen:

Hazelwood School Board Responded

Even though there was no official announcement, the Hazelwood School District on its web site stated there is “no expectation” that Jana Elementary School will

re-open. The school has been closed since last Fall and students have been attending other district schools this year

A consulting firm in October reported radioactive waste contamination had been found at Jana Elementary which is located is near Coldwater Creek. From 1942 until 1957, uranium used for atomic bombs was processed in downtown St. Louis. The production of uranium was later moved to Weldon Springs in St. Charles County.

This facility operated until 1966 with some of the waste from processing uranium was dumped near Lambert St. Louis Airport. It was believed wind and rain swept contaminants into Coldwater Creek,

Jana Elementary School students went to virtually before they were transferred to different Hazelwood District schools. Testing by the Army Corps of Engineers showed no presence of radioactive material above the expected range of background level The Corps held a town hall meeting to present their findings and assure parents that the school was safe . But many parents were skeptical of that result and students remaining in transfer programs,

“From a radiological standpoint, the school is safe,” said Col. Kevin Golinghorst, St. Louis District commander, in November. “We owe it to the public and the parents and children of Jana Elementary School to make informed decisions focused on the safety of the community, and we will continue to take effective actions using accurate data.”
