Representatives from BJC Christian Hospital came before the Florissant City Council on Monday night to request an amendment to the zoning ordinance for the Northwest Health Care site on Graham Road in order to build an addition to the existing building.

The planned addition will be built in the style of the current building. New parking will also be built. The addition will consist of two floors, each with approximately 20,000 square feet of office space.

Ronald McMullen, president of Christian Hospital, said after the meeting that this was the first phase of a two-part expansion.

He said an eight-doctor group was interested in one half of the first floor. “We hope to consolidate some BJC practices that are in the area on the rest of the first floor,” McMullen said. These would be mostly general practitioners and pediatricians. The second floor, McMullen said, would probably fill fast with primarily specialists. Each floor could have as many as 16 doctors.

In three or four weeks, McMullen said, the hospital will be presenting a plan for the second phase of the expansion to the city. This second phase will double the size of the Emergency Department.

“The department was designed for 23,000 patients a year,” McMullen said, “and this year we are on track to see over 30,000.” The expansion will add 13 more patient care spaces, and increase the capacity to 45,000 patients per year. “With the expansion, we should be in great shape for five to seven years,” McMullen said.
