Some Prep Sports Begin, But Not in North County

Ferguson-Florissant And Hazelwood

Districts Move Fall Sports To Spring

By Jim Wieners

Hazelwood West Football and Girls Tennis as well as Girls Volleyball teams from Hazelwood East and STEAM Academy at McCluer South-Berkeley will have to wait until Mid-March to Early-May

(2021) to try to repeat as St. Louis Suburban Public High School Athletic and Activities Association Division or Color Pool Champions.
That is because the Ferguson-Florissant and Hazelwood School Districts are moving their prep fall sports seasons to spring due to the ongoing COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic The Missouri

State High School Activities Association Board of Directors approved in an Aug.13 virtual meeting to allow high schools to have fall sports move to an alternate spring season. That makes them

eligible tom compete in an alternate Spring, 2021 season, May 14-July 10 (2021) but they can opt out by calling MSHSAA.
The Ferguson-Florissant and Hazelwood School Districts will join the Pattonville, Ritenour and Riverview Gardens School Districts as well as the St. Louis Public Schools (Public High League) i

In their move from fall to thee alte4rnate season in spring. Other school districts in St. Louis County, including the Jennings School District and Normandy Schools Collaborative, either have not

yet decide to move to spring or attempt to compete this fall but will have to wait for clearance to play from the St. Louis Sports Medicine COVID-19 Task Force.
Non-Public (or Private) High Schools in the City of St. Louis and St. Louis County, which have not decided to move fall sports to next spring, will also have to wait for clearance to play from the

COVID-19 Task Force. That includes Incarnate Word Academy, which won the Metro Women’s Athletic Association Softball and Volleyball titles, Lutheran North, Class Two State Football

Champions (first undefeated season, sixth overall), and Trinity Catholic Class Three State Football Semifinalist. Media reports apparently believe that fall sports could start in October but that

appears uncertain. North Technical (St. Louis County Special School District) terminated sports last May.
High School Fall Sports in most other Missouri counties — including Franklin, Jefferson, Lincoln, St. Charles and Washington — began Aug. 28. That includes football wins for Duchesne over

Francis Howell North (33-0), St. Dominic, with former McCluer North head coach Jim Schottmueller as an assistant, over St. Charles West (43-20) and Orchard Farm over St. Charles High (33-6).

In addition, Francis Howell High, with former Hazelwood Central head coaches Brett Chojnacki (head) and Norm Ryan, over Columbia-Hickman (63-21) and Columbia-Rock Bridge, coached

by former Hazelwood Central head coach Van Vanetta, over Staley (26-24).
In Illinois, Boys and Girls Golf, Boys and Girls Cross Country, Girls Swimming and Diving and Girls Tennis began Aug. 10 and ends Oct. 24. All other Fall Sports including Football will take

place Feb. 15-May 1, 2021. Alton Marquette Catholic Girls Golf has five top three finishes including three wins. The Explorer Boys Golf team won two out of four meets, all in the top four.
