Randy Gardner: Points to Ponder On . . .

World Cup Soccer Results,

XFL Coming to St. Louis

By Randy Gardner

The last column I wrote was just a few days before the historic soccer games took place. The first game was the men’s loss in the Gold Cup to Mexico. It was pretty good game but the U.S. just did not have enough on this evening to pull off the win. It was a big disappointment for a lot of people including myself who was rooting for both teams to win. What a historic market that would have been for U.S. soccer on the world stage. Next the men’s team will start to gear up for the next World Cup. This will be a huge one in my opinion as fans expect the team to compete on the World Stage.

There has been a lot of debate about going with younger guys or playing with veterans. I’m offering by two cents worth , I think you have to go with the veterans, the younger guys do not have enough experience to play with these players from across the globe. You can see it when they play, the talent level is just so different.

Yes, the veteran players might be a step slower but they mentality can see the game better. I know a lot of people will disagree with that but I will stand by it all day long.

Saving the best news for last, The U.S. Women team put on a show throughout most of the tournament. I say most because they were challenged pretty hard in a few of the matches. I know it has been a very controversial time for this team both on and off the field. I will stay away from all of that because no matter what your thoughts are, half the people will disagree with you. Overall though, what an exciting win for this country. The women’s game continues to grow in popularity and the players are some of the most recognizable athletes on the face of the planet.

Congratulations to this team on a Job well done.

XFL HOPES TO SCORE BIG IN ST. LOUIS

Have you been following the XFL football league coming to St. Louis? There are either two answers that I have been hearing. You betcha and what the heck are you talking about. Both answers work.

The XFL is bringing its game to St. Louis, the team and league had tryouts this past week here, at of all places, the old Rams Park. The XFL is looking to take the area over just like the Rams did back in the ‘90s. Will it work, will St. Louis fans buy into it. I am not sure. I have been surprised by many things in my life.

From the sounds of it. The XFL league has plans to come into St. Louis and become a household name even though there isn’t a definite name for the team yet. There were some notable big names at the showcase. The league has eight teams with a ninth team formed so that it can send players to teams in case of injury. The showcase was held at the old training facility of the Rams in Earth City and the team will begin in February at the Dome. Will people be football-ed out by February after the NFL season or will they be wanting more. We will see.

BLUES MADE THE WINTER AND SPRING FUN

As far as the Blues go, its been fun watching the players take and enjoy the Stanley Cup. Players have put babies in it as well as eating their breakfast cereal out of it. The one thing Jordan Bennington can do out of it is use it to carry around all of his cash, $ 8.8 million dollars of it. That is what his two-year deal is worth. Much deserved young man, and thanks for bringing us a Stanley Cup.

There are so many players on this team that deserve the financial rewards of winning a Stanley Cup, but what worries me is that with winning comes bigger salaries and the Blues are forced to trade some guys away because of the salary increases. Oh well, we won it and I mention we because it was for all of us, all of us who have been waiting there entire lives for it. Thank you St. Louis Blues.
