It wasn’t just a Homecoming football game this year; Hazelwood East High School also celebrated 30 years of excellence since it opened in 1976.

The Spartans current home on Dunn Road is a direct result of overcrowding at the second-generation Hazelwood High School on New Halls Ferry Road in the early 1970s. Back then, students attended high school in split-shifts – East students started at 6:30 a.m. and classes dismissed at 12:30 p.m. By the mid-1970s, two new high schools, East and Hazelwood West, opened to handle the load.
This year, the Spartans honored those three excellent decades with a Homecoming parade. That afternoon, the football team beat the Troy Buchanan Trojans 25-0. This year’s homecoming dance carried the theme, “An Evening in Paradise.” Homecoming queen this year is senior Lynda Jenkins.
