Hazelwood Central Hosts High School -College Women’s Soccer Showcase

Hazelwood Central High School is hosting a Girls Soccer Showcase this Friday-Saturday at the Anheuser-Busch Center (formerly St. Louis Soccer Park), Fenton, featuring a pair of off-season Collegiate Women’s Soccer Games.

There will be 17 high schools from 3 states (Missouri, Illinois and Wisconsin) including nine from the St. Louis area (eight from Missouri and one from Illinois [Granite City]). Six of the St. Louis area schools come from three school districts — Two from Hazelwood (Central, West), two from Parkway (Central, South) and two from Rockwood (Lafayette, Summit) — while the two other St Louis, Mo., area high schools include Fort Zumwalt West (O’Fallon) and Incarnate Word Academy.

Seven high school games will be played Friday (four at 5 p.m., three at 7 p.m.) and seven more will be played on Saturday (two at 10 a.m., two at 11:30 a.m. and three at 1 p.m.). Also on Saturday Iowa State University takes on Southeast Missouri State University at 12 noon while the University of Missouri (Columbia) plays Indiana University at 2:30.

Hazelwood Central and Incarnate Word will each play two games this weekend while Hazelwood West will play only one. Friday Incarnate Word will play one of the four games at 5 p.m. as the Red Knights take on Lake Zurich, Ill., on Field 2 while at 7 p.m. Hazelwood Central battles Waterford (Wis.) Union on Field 5 while Hazelwood West plays Rolla, Mo., on Field 3. Saturday, on Field 3 Hazelwood Central plays Jackson, Mo., at 11:30 a.m. while Incarnate Word meets Park Hill (Kansas City, Mo.) at 1 p.m.

Other participating schools from Illinois include Carbondale High, Naperville-Neuqua Valley and Peoria-Notre Dame.

INCARNATE WORD ACADEMY, celebrating their 75th Anniversary, returns to the A-B Center after winning their own tournament there last weekend. The Red Knights defeated Francis Howell, 6-0 last Thursday, Nerinx Hall, 1-0 last Friday, and Fort Zumwalt West, 2-0 last Saturday.

IWA opened the season in Columbia, Mo., with wins over Rock Bridge, 4-0 March 20, and Hickman, 2-0 March 21, then traveled to St. Peters March 26 for a 4-0 win over Francis Howell North. Prior to their Midwest Women’s Athletic Association White Division opener Wednesday at Ursuline Academy, IWA has outscored their opponents 19-0. IWA has their home opener April 11 against Nerinx Hall.

HAZELWOOD CENTRAL went 0-1-2 in the Bi-State Shootout split the first two rounds of the Suburban North Conference Tournament and won a non-tournament game March 24 over Horlick, 3-1. Central opened the Bi-State Shootout March 19 with a 3-1 loss to Parkway West followed with a pair of 0-0 ties, March 21 against Fort Zumwalt South and March 24 against Belleville (Ill.) West. In games played in the Suburban North Tournament the Hawks defeated McCluer, 8-0 on March 26, and lost at Pattonville, 5-1 on March 28.

Hazelwood Central was to host Ritenour in the Suburban North Tournament third-place game last Friday, was to host Fort Zumwalt South last Saturday and opened Suburban North league play Wednesday at home against Hazelwood East.

HAZELWOOD WEST opened the season with three ties in the Bi-State Shootout — including a pair of 1-1 games with Francis Howell North, March 9, and Cor Jesu, March 24, and a 2-2 tie March 21 against Belleville (Ill.) Althoff. West followed that by winning the first two rounds of the Suburban North Tournament — March 26 over Hazelwood East (10-0) and March 28 over Ritenour (5-0). West was to play Pattonville at home last Friday in the Suburban North Tournament championship game and at Pattonville in a Suburban North Conference game Wednesday after playing Suburban North rival McCluer at the Eagan Civic Center last Monday.
